NATIONAL CHAMPS 2002 STARTS August 3,2002

Defending National Champion , Fide Master Warren Elliott, is ready to defend his title when the 2002 Jamaica Chess Championships gets underway on August 3, 2002 at the Norman Manley Law School, at 1:00pm.

FM Warren Elliott made jamaica chess history last year when he won the title with maximum points (9/9).

For the first time in the tournament's history, Invitations have been extended to 24 players who will be accomodated in the format of a Nine Round Swiss Tournament.

Many of the island's strongest players are expected to compete and the list includes FM Grantel Gibbs, Jamaica's highest rated player NM Shane Matthews, NM Jomo Pitterson, NM Geoffrey Byfield and NM Duane Rowe who is making a long awaited return to chess.

Membership: $1000.00
Caution fee: $500.00

In event of tie, there will be a Play off:

The Top six in the National Championships will be selected to the Olympiad Team

The World Chess Olympiad will be played in Bled, Slovenia between October 25 and November 11, 2002.
