MATTHEWS IS 2002 NATIONAL CHAMPION

Number 1 ranked NM Shane Matthews emerged as the Krysoft Financial Software sponsored 2002 National Champion after drawing his last two games against NM Wheeler and Mark Smith, in Rounds 8 and 9 respectively to end with 6.5 points.

NM Jomo Pitterson was second with 6 points after he also drew his last two games with NM Duane Rowe and NM Robert Wheeler, respectively.

The fight for third place and a place on the Olympiad Team was very tough indeed as Five players were tied for 3rd to 7th place with 5.5 Points.

FM Warren Elliott faced with the possibility of not coming in the top Six pulled out all stops on Saturday to defeat NM Mark Holness, with the black pieces. He then drew with Equitable Brown on Sunday to ensure a place in the top six.

Tying for third to seventh place in tiebreak order were, Duane Rowe, FM Gibbs, FM Warren Elliott, Mark Smith and Peter Myers.

The top Six players in this years 2002 National Champs will automatically be selected to represent Jamaica in the Upcoming Chess Olympiad, which will be held in Slovenia, Bled, in November.
