PITTERSON/ROWE/PALMER/MATTHEWS LEAD NATIONAL CHAMPS 2002 after rnd 4
--------------------------------------------------------------

"If you cant stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.."
----

Nm Jomo Pitterson stormed into the lead of the 2002 Krysoft Software sponsored Nationals Champs in round 4 yesterday, when he defeated defending Champion, FM Warren Elliott with the white pieces, in a high quality game. The many time National and former Junior Champion is now poised on three points.

Nm Pitterson now shares the lead with NM Shane matthews, who also defeated FM Gibbs and NM Duane Rowe, who defeated Eton Chin.

The fourth surprise leader, Ryan Palmer is also on three (points), after demolishing Mario Marshall. Ryan Palmer, a former National Champion, has made an impressive return to chess, and plays alongside his sister, Maria Palmer who leads the National Womens Champs, being played at the same venue.

Junior Player, Malaku Lorne continued his fairy tale debut in his first Nationals by upsetting veteran player Peter Myers to end up on a respectable 2 points after round 4. Lorne has played some impressive chess, by drawing with NM Pitterson and NM Wheeler and outplaying Nm Holness in the opening, but lost his way in the endgame transposition ,allowing Holness to "escape with a victory."

Geoffrey Byfield, who got off to a bad start has managed to climb his way back into contention for the title after defeating Bertram Scott, to bring himself to 2 points, and only one point behind the leaders.

Nm Robert Wheeler beat promising young player Equitable Brown to share joint second place, with FM Warren Elliott, who is also on 2.5 points.
