Crisis Intervention

***6 STEP MODEL OF CRISIS INTERVENTION***

The first 3 are listening and the last 3 are the acting part

STEP 1: Define the problem- Listen and understand what is going on.

STEP 2: Ensure client safety-Minimize the physical/psychological danger to self and others

STEP 3: Provide Support- Emphasize how you care for them

STEP 4: Examine Alternatives- what are all the possible choices

STEP 5: Make Plans-identify resources, provide coping mechanisms, etc...

STEP 6: Obtain Commitment- commit to trying the plan out

LISTENING SKILLS......

Restatements: Make a simple statement in your own words telling them what you heard them say. Ex: a. "I don't think i can talk to him tonight. There are just to many problems for us to deal with.   b. "You don't think you can handle or face the issues at this time?"

Reflection of feelings: Confirming to the person that you understand their feelings.  Ex: a "My boss really chewed me out in front of everyone today"  b. "Sounds like he embarrassed you."

Open Ended Question: Starts with what or how or ask for more clarification or details.  "Tell me about your relationship" "What will you do?" "In what ways does..." "Explain how that affected you" "

Closed Ended Question: seeks specific, concrete information. These begin with do, did, does, can, have, had, will, are, is, and was.

"When was the first time you did that?" "Where are you going to go?" "Does this mean..." " Are you willing to..." "Did you do well at school?" etc

Owning Feelings: Using "I" Statements. I feel, I think, I said, I know, instead of You, He, She, They or disowning your feelings. Ex: If I was crying and upset but saying that i'm fine, i would rather want to hear someone say, "I'm a little confused. You say you are ok, though your behavior doesn't fit with that" instead of, "Life isn't that bad, stop crying, come on, cheer up." .............Do you get it?

Also I statements usually are laid out as: I feel__when__ because_____

I feel__confused_

when i hear you say you are ok but crying at the same time

because my understanding is that something is wrong.

I would like for you to tell me what you are feeling and why you are crying.
