F61. In Moria, a “huge orc-chieftain...” (a cave troll, in the film) “... thrust with his spear straight at Frodo.” Why? What motivated that attack?

F62. Escaping from Moria after Gandalf’s fall, FOTR says, “Out of the Gates they ran and sprang down the huge and age-worn steps, the threshold of Moria... they did not halt until they were out of bowshot from the walls.” By the time they left Moria, the hobbits were exhausted and grief-stricken, and two were injured. How did they keep going? How did they keep up with the Big Folk, hurtling down huge steps and then running on and on?

F63. In FOTR, when Frodo hears Galadriel’s song in Lorien, the book says, “Yet as is the way of Elvish words, they remained graven in his memory...” Years later, did Merry, Pippin, and Sam remember all the Elvish words and music they had ever heard? Did they ever talk about it, or learn more?

F64. There is a lot of abandonment in Frodo’s life, isn’t there? How wonderful he must have felt when his cousins and Sam insisted on accompanying him to Rivendell... and far, far beyond.

F65. Tales and songs have been a part of campfires in just about every culture. Even the Company participated, as in ‘A Knife In The Dark’. What other stories might they have told over the course of the journey? Perhaps Gimli re-told some of the events of The Hobbit from Gloin's perspective, different from that of Bilbo, which is how Frodo and the other hobbits would have known them.

F66. In FOTR, we learn that Frodo was Bilbo’s “favorite” younger cousin. Why? What was it about Frodo’s ‘spirit’ that Bilbo was particularly drawn to? On the other hand -- was Bilbo, Frodo’s “favorite” older cousin? Why? Or... why not? What did Frodo know about Bilbo before he came to Bag End to live? Did he think all (or any) of the stories about his eccentric relative were true?

F67. In Rivendell after Frodo awakens, when he meets Bilbo in the Hall of Fire after the feast, FOTR says that Aragorn stood “for many minutes ... looking down at them with a smile” before Bilbo noticed him. What was Aragorn thinking about? What was making him smile?

F68. According to FOTR, Bilbo told Frodo all about the Ring soon after Frodo came to live at Bag End. What led up to Bilbo’s decision? How did he know that Frodo -- barely a tween -- was someone he could trust with his secret?

F69. After the Birthday Party where Bilbo disappeared, Gandalf stayed at Bag End “for over two months”. What was he doing all that time? Did the folk of Hobbiton get used to seeing a wizard come and go? What did the Gamgees think about a wizard at Bag End? Did young Sam and Gandalf get to know one another at all?

F70. When Frodo awoke in Rivendell, Gandalf tells him that “Sam has hardly left your side, day or night, except to run messages.” What kind of messages? From whom? What did Sam learn about Rivendell, going back and forth for days?

F71. Donated bunny from Periantari:
Elaborate on Sam and Pippin’s first sight of Elves in the chapter ‘Three is Company’ from FOTR. (I especially love how Tolkien described how Sam first saw the Elves and was taken by surprise not only by their song but also with the fruits upon their table... “Sam could never describe in words, nor picture clearly to himself, what he felt or thought that night, though it remained in his memory as one of the chief events of his life.")

F72. In FOTR Bilbo says to Frodo, “But I thought you knew enough Elvish at least to know dûn-adan: Man of the West, Númenorean. But this not the time for lessons!” Just what were Frodo’s lessons like? What were Bilbo’s teaching methods? Did Frodo even want to learn Elvish, or have lessons when he came to live at Bag End? Could he have been inspired to "go back to school" upon seeing Sam's joy in learning? Or was it an organic process, Bilbo teaching Frodo new things as he thought of them, as they hiked and lived together?

F73. In Rivendell Bilbo says to Frodo, “It is difficult to keep awake here, until you get used to it.” What was it like for Bilbo when he first began living in Rivendell? What did the various residents of Rivendell think of him?

F74. Frodo and Gimli were both quite taken with the Lady Galadriel, each in their own way. Did they ever talk together about her?

F75. In Lórien, we learn that the only hobbit who claimed to know how to handle boats is Merry. Sam was uncomfortable in them, and Frodo had other things on his mind... but what of Pippin? Was that long journey down the Great River interesting to him, or tedious? Did he learn anything about boats, voluntarily or otherwise? If so, who taught him?
