FREE PEOPLES OF MIDDLE-EARTH FP1. ELVES: Elrond had months to decide who would accompany Frodo and Sam south, yet by the day before they left Rivendell, he still claimed not to have filled two of the nine places. Perhaps he was waiting for Merry and Pippin to volunteer, as Frodo and Sam had volunteered? After the Fellowship has been formed – or just before -- Elrond and Gandalf (or Elrond and Aragorn... or Elrond and someone) discuss the two youngest hobbits. FP2. DWARVES: What do Gimli and Gloin think of Rivendell – its architecture, stonework, and inhabitants? Is this the first time young Gimli has seen a dwelling of Elves? What had he been expecting, if anything? Is he comfortable staying there, or is he anxious to depart? FP3. MEN: Before meeting Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin, Aragorn has formed many conclusions about hobbits – particularly since he spends so much time in and out of Bree, and knows many of the inhabitants well. How do the four hobbits conform to his preconceptions? What is his opinion of hobbits before they meet, and are they borne out – or changed? Perhaps he finds new respect after Frodo survives 17 days with the Morgul shard in his shoulder? Does he discuss his ideas about hobbits to anyone -- perhaps to a hobbit, or Elrond, or Gandalf? Or does he keep his thoughts to himself? FP4. ENTS: After
spending so much time with the Ents, Merry and/or Pippin pick up a few words of
“Entish”, or tree-talk. Do they try it out on the White Tree of Gondor? Or
perhaps the Mallorn of Hobbiton? What is the result? FP5. HOBBITS: In FOTR, Frodo tells Gandalf that “there have been times when I thought the inhabitants too stupid and dull for words, and have felt that an earthquake or an invasion of dragons might be good for them.” Are there Shire legends or histories of earthquakes? What do hobbits think causes them? FP6. WIZARDS: Tolkien doesn’t say what happened to Gandalf’s sword – Glamdring – after the War. Did Gandalf, by chance, give it to someone as a gift? To the new King, or to Prince Faramir? Or perhaps to Pippin at the Havens?
