AGRICULTURE


Basically agricultural, Sta. Maria produces ample supply of rice, corn and other grain, vegetales, fruits and root crops. It is famous nationwide for its sweet mangoes, luscious water melon and delicious root crops sush as "tuge" and "tungo" which are usally harvested in February.

About 2,902.50 hectares or 30.54% of the towns land area is devoted to crop production. Of the area planted to rice approximately 2,666 hectares are rainfed and 236.50 hectares are irrigated. (0 hectares of the irragted area are utilized for secnd cropping (palgad). An area of 3.273.563 hectares are classified as non-productive agricultural area or the open grassland.

The Bureau of Agricultural Extension statistics collated in 1997 showed that irrigated rice land yeilds 90 cavans per hectares during the first cropping (June to October) and 100 cavans per hectares during second cropping (December to March). The rainfed area yielded an average of 80 cavans per hectare.




MINERALS


Rich deposits of gravel and sand and volcanic tuff (adobe) are found in Sta. Maria thereby makes construction costs in the town relatively cheaper.

Quarrying has been a good source of livehood among the town folks
