Un-Da Moose Stomps Troll
(Week 3) In a week full of upsets, there was one game that stood out from the crowd. The Northern Michigan Yoopers secured their first victory in week two over the heavily favored Detroit Drive. The Yoopers have slowly been improving each week and finally made enough points to win. Led by second year quarterback Patrick Ramsey, N. Michigan scored 65 points in the twelve point victory.
Detroit fans to this day are still in shock. After the Prez Picks, Driveheads were shooting for the moon. The 1-2 start to the 2003 season has started many to rethink their predictions and a huge turnout of fans are returning their Detroit Drive jerseys to the nearest Pro Shop.
PWFFL historians disagree that it is too early to write off Detroit's playoff drive. S. Norman Laxative, who has been following the league from its beginning, states, "There have been numerous teams that have started out slow, but turned their season around to make the playoffs. One does not have to look farther than just last year when both Kalamazoo and Rhode Island only had one win apiece after week 3."
At a recent Press Conference Detroit Coach Gary Moeller agreed with Mr. Laxative's optimism, "Look.. we can still hypothetically go 12-2, that's a pretty safe bet to make the playoffs." Also at the conference, reporters probed about how the Drive will prepare for their arch-rival England Teasers who they meet in week 4.
The Yoopers have been pretty quiet after the win against their fellow Michigan competator. With hunting season starting, they may have taken cover in their blind, waiting for the Bengals of Rocko to walk into their crosshairs. They will get their wish, as Rocko will be matched up with the Yoopers in week 4.
Kalamazoo 100, Wisconsin 100
This is just the beginning of a number of upsets that transpired in week 3. Kalamazoo was favored by 14 points by the Vegas line-makers and Wisconsin easily covered the spread. The Vikings knew that they were going to have a battle on their hands, but never expected this result. Wisconsin's hard efforts over the season finally paid off, sorta. The tie was only half of their goal, and still leaves them as the only team in PWFFL without a win. This was Kalamazoo's first tie in their history and Wisconsin's 3rd. Next week is a big week for both teams, as they take on their most heated rivals. Wisconsin will host Puck Bowl Champion Rhode Island, who they are winless against in their last three meetings. Kalamazoo takes on Seattle which both teams circled on their calander as the most important regular season game.
Timbuktu 88, W. Palm Beach 75
The W. Palm Beach Chads are out to their best start in franchise history this year. Their winning streak ended at two though, as they met up with a Timbuktu team that needed to wash the bitter taste of defeat from their mouths. The Chads are concerned that their star runningback, Clinton Portis, is starting to fall victim to the Denver Bronco curse. Luckily, they have been airing it out with a stellar passing game lead by starting quarterback Hasselbeck. The Buccaneers are still trying to figure out their passing attack, as record setting QB, Gannon has yet to find his rhytem this season and with no backup to speak of, Timbuktu is betting the farm on the ageing quarterback. Timbuktu will face the test of a resurging Green Bay Fudgepackers and W. Palm Beach will take on Timbuktu's fiance, Kim owner of the Benton Harbor Hoodlems.
Rhode Island 91, Rocko 70
The Champs continue to chug along and turned out another 90+ point game in route to victory in the rematch of Puck Bowl IV. The Ridicule decided to air it out against the Bengals with a combined 45 points earned by their WR core, and just 12 by their RB's. Rocko's Defense and franchise player, Heap, made the final score respectable after poor performances out of the rest of the team. The Bengals need to watch out next week against the Yooper who have finally gotten the taste of PWFFL blood. Rhode Island has a similarly tough matchup as they face a Wisconsin team that is starting to get desperate for a win.
Seattle 80, Green Bay 70
Vegas had Green Bay favored over the Slugs for probably the first time in league history. Those that follow the league closely would know that it will be just a matter of time before all of the Slugs start to produce big. The start of just that turn a round was apparent when star Slug Tomlinson jumped up the production to 21 points against the Fudgepackers. Although Faulk will probably be down for the next month, Seattle got good news when backup runningback Bryson turned up his game in practice and is starting to show the Slug leader that he is ready for a starting spot. The Slugs will need all they can muster when the face the Vikings in week 4.
England 66, Benton Harbor 51
The Battle of the Midwest. These co-workers battled it out for the chance to go up 2-1 in PWFFL. Dispite a bad game from McAllister, the Teasers were able to ride the huge game out of K. Collins to get the win over the slumping Hoodlems. England looks to add to their undefeated record against the Detroit Drive in week 4. Benton Harbor has a tough matchup themselves when they go against second place W. Palm Beach.
