symphony

It is an extended work for orchestra, usually in three or four movements. It is regarded as a typical form of orchestral composition. In general, the first and last movements have a relatively fast tempo. And the second would be slower. The third probably be in the dance form of minuet or scherzo.
Orchestral demands for symphony increased from the Baroque period. Mozart was the first composer who gave a separate score for the woodwinds. By Mahler's time, a symphony began to includ a chorus or a percussion with strings, brass and woodwinds.

Mahler / Symphony No. 4 in G (1st movement)
