Early settlers
The first records are from the early 17th century, and a man called Trond Åvendal, from whom we descend, lived at Åvendal in 1617 when he is reputed to have owned 18 mrk smør( butter).
The taxes paid to the church and crown were not paid as money, but by agricultural products like butter, furs or salmon, after what was most convenient.
Trond's son, Jakob Trondsen, who lived between 1652-1709, and grandson Sigbjørn Jakobsen (1687-1763) also ran the farm, although in those days most were only tenant farmers.
It is hard to find records of ownership from that period, if any exist at all.
Sigbjørn had a daughter called Guri who was born in 1715. She married Ola Larsen from Gyland (1711-1779) and their son Bernt Olsen was born in 1751. It was to be Bernt's and wife Siri Gundersdtr. Kvam's(born 1755) son who was to bring the family back as farmers at Åvendal.
