Ingeborg Ougendal feeding the chicken in the Ougendal courtyard, around 1925 A rare occasion as six brothers and sisters are photographed together. The picture was taken by photographer Eskildsen in Egersund, probably around 1930.Left to right: Inga, Ida, Hans Kristian, Sine, Georg and Gunda A growing family gathers on the corn-fields in Minnesota, around 1925.Back row, left to right: Hans Kristian, Marie, Jakob, Gina , her son George and Magnus. In the front stands Melvyn and Norman, Gina and Magnus' two other sons. James was still not born. The four emigrants photographed together in Minneapolis. Sine came to the US in 1916, so it is probably taken not too long after she arrived . From left to right: Gina, Hans Kristian, Sine and Jakob
Part of the family gathered for a photo-session around 1927. Left to right: Ida, Georg, Gunder, Johan Birkeland with son Gudmund on his lap, Ingeborg, Solveig Birkeland, later Ripland on the lap of her aunt Inga, Gunda with Ingrid Birkeland, later Nesvåg, on her lap. Probably the oldest outdoor picture from Åvendal. Gunder Jakobsen and part of his family proudly poses in front of their new home, built in 1903. The stairs to the front door are yet to be completed, and judging from the age of the children the picture was probably taken in 1904.Left to right : Hans Kristian, Gunder, Gunda, Ingeborg, Georg, Jakob and finally the 64 year old grandmother Ingeborg Hanssen who was Gunders mother.Gina, Inga and Sine were absent from the picture while Ida was still not born. The house was built in a style that was quite common for that period. Many houses in Egersund built around the turn of the century are of similar size and style. Gunder and Ingeborg poses in front of the house while Georg looks after the cows and Ida sits in front of the old barn. Ida had put the year 1925 on this picture in her photo-album. Another copy was found among Hans Kristian's belongings, with words of great compliment written by Ida on the back of it. She probably missed her brothers and sisters living so far away from home Friends and family gathered at Åvendal to celebrate the wedding of Georg and Johanna, 26th April 1930. Back row: Ingeborg Barstad(Johanna's sister),unknown unknown, Kristian Birkeland(Georg's cousin), unknown (girl-friend of Hans K) and Hans KristianFront row( left to right): Ingvald Puntervoll and Ida( who were married 6 months later), Johanna and Georg, Johan Birkeland(cousin of Georg),Ingeborg and Gunder Jakobsen.

Ruth Golf is putting grass on a haydrying-rack.Due to unpredictable weather, these are still in use as they provide a safer way of drying than putting the grass flat on the ground if the weather should turn bad. Cousins Gunnar Åvendal (left) and Mandius David Golf photographed in the court-yard at Åvendal in the summer of 1955. From an early age on they had a special friendship which has lasted to this day. A view towards the Ougendal farm house, probably from the 1950ies. The author with father and brother on a walk on the Ougendal moors, January 1999.
