June, 1999
An hour East of Portland, Mt Hood is easily visible on clear days. It is amazing how many different places you can be in Portland, and still be able to see Hood. You see something like Mt Hood, and then you see what is left of Mt St Helens, and you get a new level of respect for what happened there. Unfortunately I don't have pics, but there are also several places you can go where you could see Mt Hood, Mt St Helens, and Mt Adams in the same view. From a plane you can easily see those plus Mt Ranier and Mt Jefferson.

Mount Hood in June. I took this picture when I came up here in June to interview with Intel. The day was about 85 degrees out, and I was in shorts and a t-shirt. Amazingly, I was running around in the snow and was still quite warm. Mt Hood is famous for having year round snow skiing most years. So in a few months when friends give me grief about the rain, I will remind them that it is snowing on Mt Hood and I can easily make a day trip to go skiing. |

If this picture was a little larger, you could tell that the girl pulling the sled was wearing a sleeveless shirt. Unfortunately, when I returned to this very spot a month later when in Portland finding a place to live, this entire area was dirt. The snow had melted except for a higher up on Hood. |

If you take the scenic route around Mt Hood, you will travel down this road. The resolution isn't very good here, but I think you get the idea. Mountain pass roads that wind around Hood and over various runoff streams. Talk about a place that is so full of contrast. An hour one way takes you to the coast, an hour the other takes you to snow. |
