February 2000

Three day weekend means it's time to get out and see something new.  So on a rare "nice winter day" in Oregon, Ally and I loaded up and headed out to the coast.  Unfortunately, when we left Cannon Beach, we left the semi clear skies behind.  So if some of these pictures seem somewhat dark, well, welcome to Oregon in the winter.

While this location has been covered on another page, it was our starting point for our tour of the coast.  Cannon Beach is always a favorite beach town to visit.

Just another shot to give you the idea of the kind of town this is.  The whole place is like this, not like a typical city on the ocean.  This one truly has held on to its small town feel.

The city is only a handful of streets deep...and on the other side, you can see the mountains starting to build up again.

There is no way we could go to the beach without giving Ally a chance to swim, so off we went near Haystack Rock.

This was a better real picture than a scanned picture.  So you'll have to use your imagination that this is a good picture.

Enough of Cannon Beach...and down the coast we went towards Tillamook.  Not far down the road we came across this area.  It looked like a cliff that dropped down to the ocean...

And sure enough, I was right.  A small trail led us to a point where we could look back and on to the cliffs, with the ocean crashing in below.  This is an absolutely amazing place to visit on the coast.

Another shot from the cliffs....

Ok...last one.

A little further down the road was a scenic overlook area before we dropped down in elevation.  The rest of the drive would have us at sea level.

What looked like a small lake turned out to be an inlet from the ocean.  From what I could tell, this is a big place to rent canoe's and kayaks.

This area is amazing.  This rock is isolated, and about 30-40 feet off the shore.  It has some vegetation growing on it, and the one lone tree.

Oregon seems to have a thing for lone rocks in the water.

Shortly before hitting Tillamook, we stumbled across this area.  Another ocean inlet with some isolated piers.
