Cannon Beach is one of those places that you have a hard time comparing to any other place like it.  When I was in Houston, we had Galveston Beach, and you didn't get in the water because it felt like climbing into a warm bath.  Oregon is just the opposite.  You see children and dogs in the water, but make no mistake about it....the water is COLD!

It's not every day that you sit on the beach and stare at mountains.  Amazingly, once you stand in the water for a while you actually get used to it.

Similar view of the ocean scenery, but with a little beach thrown in.  Cannon Beach is a very nice community, and a great beach area.  What you can't see in these pictures are the dozens of dogs running free on the beach.  The town of Seaside is just up the road, but does not even compare to Cannon Beach.

You know how you hear about Oregon having "gray days"?  Unfortunately the early part of the day was just that.  The good news is that Oregon is filled with such natural beauty that you hardly even notice it.

No, the sun was not out as much as it looks.  Blame it on a cheap camera and my trying to brighten it up off the scanner.  This is the view North of the rocks.

Odds are, if you have seen pictures of the Oregon coast, you saw Cannon Beach.  I am quite a ways down the beach when I took this picture.  One HUGE rock in the water, with 3-4 chimney stacks beside it.

From a similar angle, just a little closer to it.  You can actually wade across to the rock and walk around the base of it.  They have access to the upper areas blocked off.  That is a good thing though, because it seems that there are hundreds of birds that call the rock home.

From the ocean, looking back at some of the homes in the town of Cannon Beach.  Again, this camera does not do it justice because just past the town is a range of mountains.

A parting shot of the rock.  Words can not explain the initial impression you get when you go to this place.  It is such a unique place, and such a unique thing to see at the beach.  For people from the West Coast, this is probably nothing.  But for us Texans, Oregon keeps surprising me every time I go exploring.  Sorry, no pictures of Ally swimming here.  I took a couple, but they didn't turn out too well.  But with 50-60 degree water, dogs can swim for a very long time and never overheat.  One of the great things about this beach is that dogs are very welcome, and Ally managed to make about 6 new friends, including a Great Dane.
