July, 2000

Our July 4 road-trip continued South into Northern California to tour the redwoods in the Jedediah Redwood Forest.  Having never seen redwoods before, I did not know what to expect, and was I ever surprised by these.  Unfortunately, my disposable cameras have finally met their match.  Even with the flash, it was just too dark in the forest for a lot of the pictures.

On our way from Crater Lake to Northern California, I noticed a sign for the "House of Mystery".  I laughed, but my girlfriend Jeanie insisted that this was a great place.  Supposedly designed by a crazy lady, this was supposed to be a really neat mansion to tour.

It didn't take long for Jeanie to figure out that she had mistaken this place for something completely different.  But having already paid out $15, we enjoyed the tour.  Supposedly on the Discovery Channel and the X Files, this really did turn out to be a neat place.  I will save you the long story, but you can probably find their website (Oregon Vortex, House of Mystery).

Finally, the state line.  All we needed was a motel room and a hot shower.  Our day today had started with a lukewarm "shower" in a restroom sink outside of a campground.  There were no rooms around Crater Lake, so the Durango became our lodging!

I don't know the name of this river, but if you ever cross into Northern California from Grants Pass, OR, take your fly rod!  HUGE trout were all over this river.

I still can not get over how tall these trees are.  Unfortunately we dont have anything next to it to show you just how huge these trees are.

The road through the forest was a narrow one lane road.  You can see how the trees blocked out a LOT of light in there.

This time we have a way to show the size of the trees.  Jeanie jumped up in this one (once unsuccessfully, but we got the bark off the front of her shirt from where she skidded down the tree, before taking this picture) to show you how big this is..

"Hi, I'm a tourist!"

For $2.00, what the Hell, I'll drive my truck through a tree for $2.00.  Next stop, to buy a small wooden bear, just to mock Jeanie who insisted there was no market for those, prior to us seeing no less than 4 dozen stores selling them out front!

And now, the next part of the trip, a tour up the Oregon Coast,

Or....
