Simulation

Session nine will explain
why time compression is necessary to predict the future. You will be able to comprehend how the quality of the model used directly affects the quality of the simulation. Also, be able to recognize the uses of simulation as well as identify whether a model of a system is continuous or discrete, whether a model of a system is predictable or probabilistic and whether a model of a system contains feedback. Be able to analyze the Monopoly game simulation as an example of strategy building with a computer and the SimCity simulation as an example of long-term versus short-term planning in a feedback environment. Next, understand how and why validation of a model is done. Be able to understand how simulation languages make writing simulations easier. Finally, identify the specialized hardware necessary for virtual reality and recognize situations in which virtual reality would be appropriate.

Textbook
The following are the activities for this Week. It is important to emphasize that each assignment is designed to be performed in one day, and maximum two if pertinent.

Read from the textbook, "The Computer Continuum", chapter 11 (Simulation: Modeling the Physical World).

Session Nine:

  • Post Bio to Chat Room.
  • Web Exercises:
    p.368 #3
  • Post answers to Chat Room

  • Group Discussion of Puzzler #14, p368
  • Continue w/ Final Project Preparation. Discussion Forum must reflect group interaction

Due at the conclusion of each session to the Instructor.
