The Internet and the Web

Session six will introduce the
historical beginnings of the Internet. You will understand the uses of Gopher and related text-based access methods and identify some of the tasks the Internet can perform. Be able to realize how the human need to communicate helped motivate the development of the World Wide Web and the concepts of hypertext and hypermedia and their uses in a multimedia environment such as the Internet. Also, recognize the separate parts of URLs and what each represents and the minimum hardware and software components needed to access the Internet. Be able to comprehend how search engines enable convenient access to the information available on the Internet and those issues involved with downloading software from the Internet or putting together your own Internet page. Finally, understand the issues, concepts, and uses of e-commerce and of accessing the Internet as a business tool.
