MFLA Week Four

Bevv's Ravens overcome 17-0 deficit to come back and defeat Torres' Raiders

"Round Two" of the Inter-Conference match-up Weeks is tied 2-2; Two more Week 4 contests postponed

February 17, 2001 - Los Angeles

MFLA Week Four was the second of five weekends where all of the contests played are Inter-Conference match-ups. At the time of this posting, only four of the six scheduled games had been played, and the AFC and NFC were tied with two victories apiece. Out of the four played thus far, probably the most exciting victory was the one achieved by Tim "Bigg Badd Bevv" Beverly, and his MFLA Baltimore Ravens. His team was down 17-0 in the 2nd Quarter, but came back and outscored Oscar Torres' MFLA Oakland Raiders 30-7 to capture the victory. Bevv's comeback was the largest comeback in MFLA history (the previous record was a comeback from a 14 point deficit, accomplished by three different teams). Baltimore's 30-24 victory is the MFLA Week Four "Game Of The Week." Also, Paul "Sweetness" Neve and his MFLA Detroit Lions remained undefeated with a 20-8 victory over Craig DeGraff's MFLA NY Jets; Eric "Skew" Askew's MFLA Tennessee Titans defeated DeMarrio "DMAN" Gray's MFLA Minnesota Vikings 41-14; And Kevin "K-Ham" Ham's MFLA New England Patriots knocked off Min "Slayer" Robertson's previously undefeated MFLA St. Louis Rams 40-15. Two other Week Four contests were postponed and rescheduled: Jason Lewis' MFLA Green Bay Packers visit Jeremy "Jerm Dog" Gardner's MFLA Jacksonville Jaguars, and Brian Smith's MFLA Tampa Bay Buccaneers visit Fred "King Mur" Castillo's MFLA Denver Broncos later on this week.

The Baltimore vs. Oakland contest was a battle of two coaches hungry for a win. Bevv had lost two tough, closely fought games to Jerm Dog's Jaguars (a 40-35 loss) and to Slayer Robertson's Rams (a 30-28 loss). Torres also had two tough losses. He dropped his opener of the season to Sweetness' Lions 29-14, and then a dropped a 28-23 decision to K-Ham's Patriots. He was able to rebound in MFLA Week Three with a 47-28 victory over Skew's Titans. The 1st Quarter of the Ravens - Raiders contest was primarily a defensive battle. Both teams were stopped on consecutive drives. Raiders Kicker Sebastian Janikowski's 49-yard field goal was the only scoring of the quarter.

In the 2nd Quarter, it was the Raiders who began to look dominate, as they quickly took the lead. On the Raiders first drive, Raiders QB Rich Gannon led the Oakland offense downfield, mixing up nice running plays with good passing. The drive was concluded when Gannon hit WR Jerry Porter on a quick 3-yard strike. The Raiders led 10-0. Bad luck fell upon -->

Bevv's Ravens on the next drive, as Quarterback Peyton Manning was intercepted by Raiders CB Eric Allen at Baltimore's 37-yard line. Allen returned the stolen pass all the way to the endzone for a touchdown, and a commanding 17-0 lead. That interception ended up being a 'blessing in disguise' for Bevv and his Ravens. The Baltimore troops then became fired up. Manning got into his rhythm, and led the Ravens downfield. Manning's 6-yard strike to WR Jermaine Lewis finally got the Ravens on the scoreboard. After a blocked extra-point, the Raiders still led 17-6. The next drive was bad news for the Raiders. MLB Ray Lewis, the cornerstone of the Ravens defense, got a hard hit on QB Gannon. Sure enough, a few seconds later, Gannon was determined done for the day with an injury. The Raiders ended up being stopped on their drive, and the Ravens took over. Manning once again led his offense downfield, and this time it was WR Ed "Sure Hands" McCaffrey that caught the touchdown pass. After a successful two-point conversion, Oakland's lead was cut to 17-14 at the Halftime break.

The 3rd Quarter was a defensive battle similar to the 1st Quarter. The teams took turns stopping each other's drives, but Ravens Kicker Matt Stover did manage to kick a 32-yard field goal to tie the score at 17-17 heading into the 4th Quarter. Finally, in the 4th Quarter, Baltimore made it's run. Oakland began the quarter using a slow down, run-the-clock down strategy. Oakland's strategy did temporarily allow them to gain an advantage when backup QB Rodney Peete scored on a 6-yard QB Draw play to give them a 24-17 lead early in the final quarter. But Baltimore would not buckle under. Manning was composed, and led his offensive teammates downfield once again. This time, it was TE Shannon Sharpe that was on the receiving end of a Manning pass, and now the score was tied again at 24-24. After Oakland had to turnover the ball, Baltimore took over once again. Manning again used crisp passing to move downfield. Finally, Manning found a wide open McCaffrey for a 45-yard touchdown reception. Once again, the Ravens failed to convert their extra-point attempt, but still led 30-24. Oakland had one final chance. Peete led his offensive teammates downfield, but as time was winding down, Peete threw an errant pass right into the hands of Ravens FS Rod Woodson, who intercepted the pass in the endzone for a touchback. Another MFLA "Fantastic Finish." Oakland plays host to Jerm Dog's Jaguars in MFLA Week Five, while Bevv's Ravens play host to DMAN's Vikings.
