DE McGinest gets a crucial sack to keep the Lions out of field goal range, and allows the Patriots to remain undefeated heading into the playoffs

Broncos, Rams, Jaguars, Ravens, and Raiders close out Regular Season with victories

April 21, 2001 - Los Angeles

The MFLA [Madden Football Los Angeles] wrapped up it's third Regular Season of competition, and the 2001 MFLA Playoff Picture is now set. In the AFC, Kevin "K-Ham" Ham's MFLA New England Patriots will enter the playoffs as the #1 Seed, and they will play the winner of next weekend's AFC Wild-Card Elimination contest between Oscar Torres' MFLA Oakland Raiders, and Eric "Skew" Askew's MFLA Tennessee Titans. K-Ham's Patriots got by Paul "Sweetness" Neve's MFLA Detroit Lions, 28-26, when Patriots DE Willie McGinest made a game-saving sack that put Detroit out of field goal range. The Patriots victory is our MFLA Week Eighteen "Game Of The Week." Also in the AFC, Fred "King Mur" Castillo surprised Jason Lewis and his Defending Super Bowl Champion MFLA Green Bay Packers, 49-39, in a high scoring contest. King Mur's Broncos play host to Jeremy "Jerm Dog" Gardner's MFLA Jacksonville Jaguars in an AFC Conference Playoff game. Jerm Dog's Jaguars earned a decisive 36-16 victory over DeMarrio "DMan" Gray's MFLA Minnesota Vikings. Torres' Raiders won by forfeit, 2-0, over Tom Bout's MFLA Washington Redskins, due to Bout's resignation after Week Nine. Skew's Titans lost to Min "SlayerMin" Robertson's MFLA St. Louis Rams 35-21. The Titans enter the playoffs as the #5 Seed in the AFC.

Despite the Packers loss to the Broncos, Green Bay will still enter the playoffs as the #1 Seed in the NFC. They will play the winner of next weekend's NFC Wild-Card Elimination contest between Tim "Bigg Badd Bevv" Beverly's MFLA Baltimore Ravens, and Brian Smith's MFLA Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Smith's Bucs had a "bye" this weekend, while Bevv's Ravens won by forfeit over Craig DeGraff's MFLA New York Jets, when DeGraff experienced scheduling problems and conflicts. SlayerMin's Rams enter the playoffs as the #3 Seed, and will visit the Motor City to play Sweetness' MFLA Lions in a NFC Conference playoff contest two weekends from now.

It's been very rare this season that K-Ham's Patriots have had any contests of theirs be close through the 4th Quarter. But beginning with their 24-21 victory last weekend over DMan's MFLA Vikings, and now this weekend in their contest with Sweetness' Lions, Coach Ham has finally got to experience the exhilaration of winning a close barn burner. In the opening quarter, both defenses played well. The Patriots were shut out for one of the rare few times in the 1st Quarter, but Detroit only managed a Jason Hanson field goal after a nine play, 53-yard drive. Hanson's 41-yarder made it 3-0 in favor of the Lions.

In the 2nd Quarter, New England returned to normal and got on the scoreboard. QB Drew Bledsoe led his offensive teammates on a 73-yard, ten play drive that concluded when Bledsoe found a WR Tony Simmons open for a 4-yard

touchdown reception. After Adam Vinatieri's PAT was good, the Patriots led 7-3. Detroit answered with a six play, 60-yard drive, consuming a brief 86 seconds, and Lions HB Rickey Williams scampered in from the 5-yard line into the endzone. Hanson's extra point kick made it 10-7 in favor of Detroit. K-Ham's Patriots answered with their own quick drive, a brief 55 seconds, as Bledsoe hit TE Eric Bjornson for a touchdown. Vinatieri's PAT gave New England the lead back at 14-10 right before Halftime.

In the 3rd Quarter, Detroit was able to regain the lead when QB Troy Aikman connected with HB Rickey Williams on the second play from scrimmage. Williams 38-yard touchdown reception, coupled with Hanson's extra point kick, made it 17-14 in favor of the Lions. Bledsoe then led his offensive teammates on an eleven-play, 74-yard drive that mixed up the running and passing attack. WR Terry Glenn then caught an incredible 22-yard pass in triple coverage to then score in the endzone. Vinatieri's PAT gave the Patriots the lead back at 21-17. On the last play of third quarter, the Lions were forced to punt. CB Lance Schulters of the Patriots went back to receive the punt, but subsequently fumbled the catch. DB Corwin Brown of Detroit picks up the fumble, and gives the Lions possession of the ball. But then, Schulters immediately causes Brown to fumble the ball with a very hard hit. Both players are down on the ground with the ball near by. Schulters gets up first and picks up the ball to give possession back to New England. "What a way to end the quarter huh?" said Ham. "That was an amazing series of plays!" said an excited Ham.

In the Fourth and final quarter, New England seemed to give themselves a comfortable lead when HB Corey Dillon scored on a one-yard run up the middle to conclude a seven-play, 66-yard drive. After Vinatieri's extra point kick made it 28-17. Detroit scored on a Hanson field goal to cut the lead to 28-20, and with just under two minutes remaining, Dillon gets injured. After New England was forced to punt, Aikman hit WR Desmond Howard on the first play from scrimmage, and Howard did the rest on this 75-yard catch-and-run touchdown. And then came the key play of the game: Detroit Coach Neve decided to go for a two-point conversion. Unfortunately for the Lions though, Aikman's pass into the endzone was intercepted by LB Tedy Bruschi. A few plays later, CB Bryant Westbrook of Detroit intercepted an errant pass by Bledsoe, and runs it back to about the Patriots' 40-yard line with 1:17 remaining in the game. The Lions offense gets stopped on the next two plays, and on Third Down, Aikman did a pitch run to Williams, but DE Willie McGinest makes a huge play, tackling Williams for a big loss that took Detroit out of field goal range. The Patriots finish their second consecutive season undefeated. The Lions finish at 12-4.
