March 28, 2001 - Los Angeles MFLA Week Thirteen saw the playoff picture tighten up, as most teams are jockeying for playoff seeding. One of the tightest races for playoff seeding is taking place in the AFC North. All three teams are within a game, or half-game, within each other. Right now, it is Fred "King Mur" Castillo's MFLA Denver Broncos that leads the Division, but his lead is indeed a slim one. Right on his tail is Jeremy "Jerm Dog" Gardner, whose MFLA Jacksonville Jaguars knocked off their Division rival, Oscar Torres' MFLA Oakland Raiders, 53-46. King Mur's Broncos could have had a more sizeable lead in the Division, but lost to the AFC South's MFLA Tennessee Titans, 36-34, who are coached by Eric "Skew" Askew. Skew's Titans avenged an earlier loss to the Broncos during Week Six, in which they lost 59-7. The closely fought contest between the Broncos and Titans is the MFLA Week Thirteen "Game Of The Week." In other games, Min "Slayer" Robertson's MFLA St. Louis Rams crushed Brian Smith's MFLA Tampa Bay Buccaneers 47-10; Jason Lewis' MFLA Green Bay Packers defeated their Division rival, Tim "Bigg Badd Bevv" Beverly's MFLA Baltimore Ravens 42-28; and DeMarrio "DMAN" Gray's MFLA Minnesota Vikings won by forfeit, 2-0, over Tom Bout's MFLA Washington Redskins, due to Bout's resignation after MFLA Week Nine. "Skew," formally known as Eric Askew, has surely had his ups and downs this season. His MFLA Titans got off to a great start, beginning the MFLA 2001 Season with a 3-1 record. Then, after a tough loss to the Division rival Jets in Week Five, they ended up losing their next six games straight, leaving them at 4-7. This week though they were able to bounce back, and possibly put themselves in position for the #3 or #4 Seed in the AFC Playoffs. In the 1st Quarter of this contest, there wasn't much scoring. Tennessee got on the board first, with a six play, 65-yard drive that concluded with a 2-yard pass from QB Steve McNair to HB Eddie George. Al Del Greco's PAT made it 7-0 in favor of the Titans at the end of one. In the 2nd Quarter, the Broncos were able to tie the score when QB Jeff George was able to lead his offensive teammates on a five play, 72-yard drive downfield. HB Terrell Davis broke through for a nice nine yard run, and after Kicker Jason Elam's extra point attempt was successful, the score was tied 7-7. Tennessee answered back though. After a four play, 55-yard drive, McNair connected with George again, this time on a 29-yard pass play, |
and Tennessee was up again 14-7. But the potent offense of the Broncos retaliated ultra-quick. On the first play from scrimmage on Denver's next possession, George found ace WR Joey Galloway open for an 80-yard touchdown strike. After Elam's PAT, the score was tied again, 14-14, at the Halftime break. The 3rd Quarter was more of a defensive battle, with neither team able to score. The Broncos defense had two players that registered a good number of sacks, with LB Chad Brown recording six sacks in the game, and LB Bill Romanowski recording four sacks. The final quarter was when the offensive fireworks went off. The "McNair to George" connection was on fire, and this time, it was McNair concluding a four play, 58-yard drive with another 2-yard strike to George. Del Greco's extra point attempt was blocked, but the Titans still led 20-14. Denver achieved their first lead of the game, when George led his troops on an eight play, 76-yard drive, that was finished off with a 5-yard pass from George to WR Rod Smith. Smith's TD, along with Elam's PAT, made the score 21-20 in favor of the Broncos. On Tennessee's next drive, McNair guided a 6-play, 42-yard drive downfield, but Denver's defense came alive, and forced Skew to order a Del Greco field goal attempt. Del Greco's 44-yard field goal was good, and the Titans were ahead again at 23-21. The Bronco offense would not give up though. They came right back, and George led the Denver offense on a 7-play, 91-yard drive downfield that resulted in an 18-yard strike from George to WR Eric Moulds to give the Broncos the lead back at 28-23. Tennessee came right back with a six play, 67-yard drive, with McNair hitting WR Randy Moss on a 23-yard pass play. Del Greco's extra point was blocked again, but the Titans were still ahead 29-28. Bad luck struck the Broncos on their next drive, as George threw an errant pass, and Titans CB Terry Fair snatched it, and ran back the interception 53 yards for a touchdown. The Titans were now ahead 36-28. Denver still had one last chance to try to send the game into Overtime. George led his offensive teammates downfield quickly on a three play, 80-yard drive, and George did manage to hit Moulds in the endzone for a touchdown. But unfortunately, Castillo's two-point conversion attempt failed, and that was the ball game. Next up for Denver is Jerm Dog's MFLA Jacksonville Jaguars in an important AFC North Divisional contest, and Skew's Titans visit Bigg Badd Bevv's MFLA Baltimore Ravens.
