This year, it was MFLA 2000 Super Bowl Runner-Up Kevin Ham, and his AFC South New England Patriots that ended up as Tournament Champions, defeating the MFLA Detroit Lions, coached by Paul "Sweetness" Neve, 32-20. Including off-season tournaments, it was the third consecutive MFLA-sponsored tournament that Ham has won. His '94 Chiefs defeated the '84 49ers (also coached by "Sweetness") 54-25 in the Classic Year Square Off Tournament last September, and just last month, his Patriots defeated the Broncos of Fred "King Mur" Castillo 35-30 in the Championship game of the MFLA End Of The Year Tournament. The Championship match-up that many had expected, a Super Bowl rematch between Ham's Patriots and Jason Lewis' Packers, never materialized. New MFLA member Oscar Torres and his MFLA Oakland Raiders upset Lewis and his Packers 61-49 in an early Round Robin game. Torres ended up being the surprise of the tournament, losing a close Semi-Final match-up to "Sweetness" and his Lions, 42-35. Ham's Patriots defeated Castillo's Broncos 52-25 in the other Tournament Semi-Final game. The Championship game was more of a defensive battle than anything else. The Lions drew first blood by going into Patriots territory, but had to settle for a 35 yd field goal by Jason Hanson. Lions led 3-0. After getting the ball back after a failed New England drive, the Lions once again got into Patriots territory. And once again, they had to settle for another field goal, this one a 34-yarder by Hanson. Before the quarter was over though, New England finally got on the scoreboard when WR Terrell Owens caught the first of his game-high three touchdowns. New England led after one quarter, 7-6. Detroit regained the lead in the 2nd Quarter when QB Charlie Batch found WR Marvin Harrison in the endzone for an 8-yard reception. The Lions led 13-7. The Patriots though came right back, scoring back-to-back touchdowns before the Half: The first, a 51-yard pass from QB Drew Bledsoe to Owens (two point conversion was successful when OL Willie Roaf recovered a blocked extra point attempt, and ran it in); and the second, an 8-yard pass from QB Michael Bishop to HB Corey Dillon. The Patriots led at the Half, 22-13. The 3rd Quarter was pretty much a defensive battle, with no team able to score any points. New England was able to stretch their lead to 25-13 when Kicker Adam Vinatieri booted a 31-yd field goal. On the next drive, Batch connected with WR Germaine Crowell for a 66-yard pass play that cut the Patriots lead to 25-20, but Ham's Patriots ended up securing their lead when Bledsoe found Owens for a 49-yard TD to make it 32-20. The Lions had at least one more chance to play catch up, but Patriots CB Ty Law intercepted an errant throw by Batch to seal the victory. Kevin Ham's Patriots open the Regular Season playing host to Tom Bout's Washington Redskins, while Paul "Sweetness" Neve and his Detroit Lions play host to Oscar Torres' Oakland Raiders. 1 2 3 4 Final N.E. 7 15 0 10 32 DEN 6 7 0 7 20 MFLA Preseason Tournament Semi-Final Results: New England 52, Denver 25 MFLA 2000 MVP Drew Bledsoe threw for 341 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Patriots to a Semi-Final victory over the Denver Broncos.
