MFLA Week Two

St. Louis 44, Green Bay 28

Warner's passing and Faulk's rushing prove to be too much for Defending Champion Packers

New England, Denver, Tennessee, Detroit, and Washington also improve their records

February 7, 2001 - Los Angeles

MFLA Week Two was the first week of competition in which many Division rivals gained the opportunity to square off against one another. Probably the most noteworthy Divisional match-up was the one between the NFC South's St. Louis Rams, coached by Min "Slayer" Robertson, and the Defending MFLA Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers, coached by Jason Lewis. Robertson's Rams upended Lewis' Packers 44-28 in The MFLA Week Two "Game Of The Week." In other contests, CB Sam Madison returned the league's first punt reception back for a touchdown as Denver, coached by Fred "King Mur" Castillo, defeated Jeremy "Jerm Dog" Gardner's Jacksonville Jaguars 45-24; Kevin Ham's New England Patriots defeated Oscar Torres' Oakland Raiders 28-23; Eric "Skew" Askew's Tennessee Titans came from behind to defeat Craig DeGraff's New York Jets 37-21; Paul "Sweetness" Neve and his Detroit Lions shut out DeMarrio "DMAN" Gray's Minnesota Vikings 27-0; And Tom Bout's Washington Redskins also pitched a shutout, this one over Brian Smith's Tampa Bay Buccaneers 38-0.

Last season, Lewis' Packers went 6-0 in the NFC South on their way to an undefeated Regular Season, and a subsequent Super Bowl Championship. This season, the Packers seem to have gotten off to a rusty start. They were upset in the Preseason Tourney by Torres' Raiders, and in their most recent shootout with Robertson's Rams, the previously stingy Packer defense couldn't contain the firepower of the St. Louis offense. Green Bay got the fireworks started in the 1st Quarter when QB Brett Favre dropped back on his very first play from scrimmage and found WR Muhsin Muhammad wide open for a 44-yard touchdown. The Packers quickly led 7-0. The Rams came right back though. QB Kurt Warner hit TE Roland Williams on a 9-yard pass, concluding a four play, fifty-eight second drive to tie the score at 7-7. On Green Bay's next drive, Favre led the Green Bay offense on a six play, 74 yard drive that was culminated when Favre hit WR Tony Martin on a 19-yard strike to regain the lead at 14-7. Again, St. Louis answered with a five play, 61-yard drive, which ended with a 13-yard run into the endzone by FB Orlandis Gary. The score

was tied 14-14 after one quarter.

The 2nd Quarter was all St. Louis. Warner dropped back on his first play from scrimmage, and found a streaking Az-Zahir Hakim for a 91-yard catch-and-run touchdown to take a 21-14 lead. Then, after stopping Green Bay, Warner and Faulk led the Rams offense on an eleven play, 58-yard drive that ended with a 18-yard pass from Warner to WR Tony Horne. The Rams now led 28-14. Finally, shortly before the Half, Kicker Jeff Wilkins booted a 48-yard field goal to send the Rams into Halftime with a 31-14 lead.

St. Louis began the 3rd Quarter where they left off in the 2nd Quarter. FB Orlandis Gary took the opening kickoff and returned it 91 yards for a touchdown to give the Rams a dominating 38-14 lead. Later on, after the Rams stopped the Packers again, Wilkins kicked a 37-yard field goal to give St. Louis their largest lead of the game at 41-14. Favre then got busy again by leading the Packers offense on a seven play, 80-yard drive that concluded with a 32-yard pass from Favre to favorite WR Antonio Freeman. The Rams lead was now cut to 41-21 at the end of three.

The Packers were able to stifle the Rams offense, and Favre went back to work. He quickly found WR Tim Dwight on a 92-yard touchdown pass on the third play from scrimmage to cut the Rams lead to 41-28. But with Faulk gaining valuable rushing yards, the Packers had a hard time getting the ball back. Wilkins third field goal of the game, this one a 50-yarder, concluded the scoring. "After losing to Jay twice last season, it feels great to get a win under my belt" said Robertson. "Min played a great game, but I did have some minor criticisms of his defensive line adjustments and defensive tactics overall" said Lewis, losing his first Regular Season game in The MFLA. "But I can't take anything away from him offensively ... he played a great game." added Lewis. Up next for the Rams are another Division rival, the Baltimore Ravens, coached by Tim "The Bevv" Beverly. The Packers play host to Division rival Tampa Bay, coached by Brian Smith, on Saturday.
