MFLA Week Fifteen

Broncos score 17 points in the 4th to send game into Overtime, but Wilkins' FG is the difference

Packers, Patriots, Titans, Lions, and Buccaneers also win

April 7, 2001 - Los Angeles

There's only three more weeks remaining in the MFLA 2001 Regular Season, and the playoffs are now right around the corner. Probably the two most highly contested races are the battles for the #1 and #2 Seeds in the NFC playoffs, and the #2 and #3 Seeds in the AFC playoffs. In the NFC, Jason Lewis and his Defending Super Bowl Champion MFLA Green Bay Packers are in the lead for the #1 Seed, and they strengthened their chances of locking up home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs with a 27-7 Inter-Conference victory over Craig DeGraff's MFLA New York Jets. Paul "Sweetness" Neve's MFLA Detroit Lions still maintained their hopes for the #1 Seed in the NFC with a 22-14 victory over Jeremy "Jerm Dog" Gardner's MFLA Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars are now a half-game behind the AFC North leading MFLA Denver Broncos, coached by Fred "King Mur" Castillo. Without question, the Week 15 contest that had probably the most playoff implications attached to it was the game between Castillo's Broncos and Min "Slayer" Robertson's MFLA St. Louis Rams. Both teams needed to win, but it was SlayerMin's Rams that came out on top in an Overtime thriller, 34-31. This Inter-Conference contest is the MFLA Week Fifteen "Game Of The Week." In other contests, Brian Smith's MFLA Tampa Bay Buccaneers surprised Oscar Torres' MFLA Oakland Raiders 41-9; Kevin "K-Ham" Ham's MFLA New England Patriots defeated Tim "Bigg Badd Bevv" Beverly's MFLA Baltimore Ravens 45-7; and Eric "Skew" Askew's MFLA Tennessee Titans earned an automatic 2-0 forfeited victory over Tom Bout's MFLA Washington Redskins, due to Bout's resignation after Week Nine.

King Mur's Broncos jumped out on top first in the 1st Quarter. QB Jeff George led his offensive teammates downfield on an early drive in the quarter, and it was George hitting WR Eric Moulds on a 32 yard touchdown strike. Kicker Jason Elam's PAT made it 7-0 in favor of Denver. SlayerMin's Rams came right back. QB Kurt Warner mixed it up well, with some good running by HB Marshall Faulk, and good passing to his speedy receivers. But it was backup QB Dante Culpepper that came in and threw a 33 yard pass to WR Torry Holt to get the Rams on the scoreboard. Kicker Jeff Wilkins successful extra point attempt tied the score at 7-7. After the St. Louis defense was able to stop the Denver offense, Warner got going again. This time, it was Warner's 4 yard pass to WR Az-Zahir Hakim that gave the Rams the go-ahead score. Wilkins' PAT made it 14-7 in favor of the Rams after one.

In the 2nd Quarter, St. Louis was able to extend their lead by playing great defense, and producing just enough offense to add points on the board. LB London Fletcher had an outstanding defensive game, tying an MFLA Single Game record for most interceptions by one player. Backup QB Culpepper was able to get in the endzone on a 4-yard scamper, and Wilkins' PAT made it 21-7. The Rams took this lead into the Halftime break.

The 3rd Quarter saw both defenses play well, but both teams exchanged touchdowns. SlayerMin's Rams moved further ahead, with Warner and Culpepper taking turns directing the offense. Their most successful drive of the quarter concluded when Faulk evaded would-be tacklers to run 11 yards into the endzone. Wilkins' extra point attempt made it 28-7 in favor of the Rams. The Broncos did not fold though. Denver has their own superstar HB in Terrell Davis, and it was Davis two-yard run into the endzone that helped cut the Rams' lead to 28-14 at the end of the quarter.

In the 4th Quarter, King Mur's Broncos came alive. Backup QB Trent Green got going, and led his offensive teammates on a fairly quick drive downfield. Green found a wide open Moulds for a 25 yard touchdown strike, and Elam's PAT made the score 28-21 in favor of St. Louis. The Rams ace Kicker Wilkins, who could arguably called the MVP of the game, booted a 25-yard field goal to extend the St. Louis lead to 31-21. After Denver was stopped, the Rams offense took over, but on 4th Down, the Rams punter got sacked in the endzone for a safety. The score was now 31-23. The Rams had to punt the ball to Denver, and Denver responded. Green again found Moulds, this time on a 9-yard strike, and after a successful two-point conversion, the score was tied at 31-31, and headed towards an Overtime period.

In the Overtime Period, it was Wilkins' foot that saved the day. The St. Louis offense moved into field goal position, and Wilkins' kicked a 24-yard field goal to win the game for SlayerMin's Rams, and improve their chances of securing the #1 Seed in the NFC playoffs. "I needed this win pretty bad" said Robertson after his victory. SlayerMin's Rams have an Open Date / "BYE" during Week 16 competition, while King Mur's Broncos have a huge contest hosting Oscar Torres' MFLA Oakland Raiders, a team that defeated them 31-28 after Denver led 28-0 early in the 3rd Quarter. Whoever wins this game will surely take control of the AFC North Division.
