March 14, 2001 - Los Angeles MFLA Week Ten was the fourth week of "Midweek" games scheduled, and due to former MFLA member Tom Bout's resignation due to extenuating circumstances, there were only four contests played. DeMarrio "DMAN" Gray's MFLA Minnesota Vikings improved to 2-7 after an automatic 2-0 forfeited victory over Bout's Redskins; Kevin "K-Ham" Ham remained undefeated as his MFLA New England Patriots routed Eric "Skew" Askew's MFLA Tennessee Titans 52-6; Min "Slayer" Robertson's MFLA St. Louis Rams got a decisive victory over NFC South rival Brian Smith's MFLA Tampa Bay Buccaneers 34-3; and Oscar Torres and his MFLA Oakland Raiders improved to 4-5 with a 27-6 victory over Craig DeGraff's MFLA New York Jets. Really, the only relatively "close" contest of Week Ten was the comeback victory by Paul "Sweetness" Neve's MFLA Detroit Lions over Fred "King Mur" Castillo's MFLA Denver Broncos. Neve's Lions were down 20-0 midway through the 2nd Quarter, but then outscored the Broncos 33-6 to take the victory. The Lions exciting comeback is the MFLA Week Ten "Game Of The Week." Similar to their Week Seven contest against Torres' Raiders, Castillo's Broncos began this contest as if it was going to be a possible blowout. Denver bolted out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter-and-a-half, before Neve's Lions woke up. The 1st Quarter was pretty much a defensive battle, with both teams exchanging punts and defensive stops. Broncos Halfback Terrell Davis did manage to get in the endzone, and after Elam's extra point, Denver led 7-0. Early in the 2nd Quarter, Denver extended their lead. Newly acquired quarterback Jeff George led his offensive teammates on a nice drive downfield, and later in the drive, George found WR Eric Moulds wide open for touchdown strike. Moulds catch and Elam's extra point put Denver up 14-0. On Detroit's next possession, QB Troy Aikman was intercepted by Broncos CB Sam Madison, and Madison returned the stolen pass all of the way to the endzone. Castillo decided to go for a two-point conversion, but his attempt was unsuccessful. The Broncos now led 20-0. Finally, Detroit got motivated. Aikman got in a groove, and the offense moved downfield. After a nice mix of running plays and passing plays, Aikman found WR Germaine Crowell open for touchdown. Kicker Jason Hanson's extra point attempt was blocked, and Denver still led 20-6. After an interception by Lions CB Troy Vincent on Denver's next |
possession, the Lions offense got going again right before the end of the First Half. Aikman again led his offensive troops downfield, and once again, Aikman hit Crowell on a touchdown strike. Neve directed the offense to go for two, but his attempt failed. Denver now led at the Halftime break 20-12. In the 3rd Quarter, Detroit made their run. First, Denver got into the Lions redzone, but were forced to settle for an Elam field goal to extend Denver's lead to 23-12. Detroit got the ball, but was forced to punt by the Denver defense. But on Denver's next possession, George was intercepted again, and Lions got the ball back. The Lions got into a groove on offense, behind the crisp passing of Aikman, and nifty running moves of Halfback Rickey Williams. It was a touchdown catch by Williams from Aikman that cut Denver's lead to 23-19. Denver got the ball again, and again drove downfield, but the tough Detroit defense put a stop to their efforts, and Denver again had to settle for an Elam field goal to make the score 26-19 in favor of the Broncos. Just before the 3rd Quarter ended though, Lions FS Kurt Schulz intercepted yet another George pass, and the Lions offense moved quickly downfield into Denver territory. In the final seconds of the 3rd Quarter, Aikman found newly acquired TE Wesley Walls in the endzone for a 17-yard strike. Hanson's extra point tied the score at 26-26. Finally, in the 4th Quarter, Detroit was able to take their first lead. Early on in the quarter, Detroit has possession of the ball, and Aikman led the offense downfield. Quick-footed WR Desmond Howard exploded past his defender, and got open for a 48-yard bomb from Aikman. Howard finished with seven catches for 167 yards, but no catch was more important than this one. Howard's only touchdown of the game gave Detroit a 33-26 lead. The remainder of the quarter ended up being a defensive battle, but Denver had one last chance to try to score. The Broncos offense was moving downfield, but on their final drive of the game, George was intercepted for the fifth time, this time by Dime package defensive back Ron Rice. From there, Detroit simply ran out the clock. "My offense started slow, as well as my defense, but as the old saying goes, 'it's better late than never'" joked a happy Neve after the game. Neve's Lions next pay a visit to Adelphi Stadium to take on Skew's Titans, while King Mur's Broncos play host to Bigg Badd Bevv's MFLA Baltimore Ravens.
