March 17, 2001 - Los Angeles MFLA Week Eleven was the last week in which visiting teams were guaranteed to play their contests in fair weather conditions. Beginning with Week Twelve, all non-dome teams can utilize adverse weather effects, depending on what stadium and what city they play in. The contest that everyone thought would be a highly competitive contest, ended up being a blowout. Kevin "K-Ham" Ham's MFLA New England Patriots earned their first league victory over Jason Lewis and his Defending Super Bowl Champion MFLA Green Bay Packers, and they did it in run-away fashion. After a close, 14-6 opening quarter, the Patriots scored 41 unanswered points to win 55-6. The most exciting game of the week belonged to Tim "Bigg Badd Bevv" Beverly's MFLA Baltimore Ravens, and Fred "King Mur" Castillo's MFLA Denver Broncos. The Ravens escaped with a 20-17 victory, despite having QB Peyton Manning sacked fourteen times. The Ravens' Inter-Conference victory over the Broncos is the MFLA Week Eleven "Game Of The Week." In other games, Brian Smith's MFLA Tampa Bay Buccaneers shut out Craig DeGraff's New York Jets 10-0; Paul "Sweetness" Neve's MFLA Detroit Lions knocked off Eric "Skew" Askew's MFLA Tennessee Titans 30-17; Oscar Torres' MFLA Oakland Raiders held off DeMarrio "DMAN" Gray's MFLA Minnesota Vikings 38-24; and Min "Slayer" Robertson's MFLA St. Louis Rams crushed Jeremy "Jerm Dog" Gardner's MFLA Jacksonville Jaguars 58-14. Bevv is one of two MFLA members that has yet to purchase a Sony PlayStation 2 console. But if he continues to win like he did in Week Eleven, maybe it's not necessary to make the investment. The Ravens have suffered some disappointing losses (A 40-35 loss to Jerm Dog's Jaguars in Week 1, and a 30-27 loss to Brian Smith, the other member without a PS2 console, and his Tampa Bay Bucs in Week 8), but they've had some great wins too. They came back from a 17-0 deficit to Torres' Raiders and won 30-24; They surprised Slayer Robertson's Rams 31-22; and then this week, they knocked off King Mur's Broncos by playing great defense. The 1st Quarter was characterized by more great defense than great offense. Broncos LB Bill Romanowski ended up having an incredible game, recording twelve sacks in the contest. The Ravens defense was no slouch either, and they made the right plays at the right time. Only Broncos WR, and MFLA "Mid-Season Offensive MVP," Joey Galloway was able to dent the scoreboard in the |
opening quarter. He caught a 45-yard pass from Broncos QB Jeff George to give Denver the early lead at 7-0. The 2nd Quarter was more of the same ... good defense by both teams. Neither team could really get into an offensive groove, and both teams ended up either punting, or surrendering the ball on downs. Bevv's Ravens did manage one successful drive that was led by QB Peyton Manning. He took his team downfield in five plays, and the drive was concluded when Manning found TE Shannon Sharpe on a 39-yard strike, but Matt Stover's extra point attempt was blocked, and Denver remained in the lead at 7-6. The 3rd Quarter saw more of the same. Good defense, very little offensive fireworks. Each team traded possessions, with neither team able to sustain a successful drive. The only scoring that was achieved was a 40-yard field goal by Broncos Kicker Jason Elam to give Denver a 10-6 lead at the end of the quarter. Finally, in the 4th and final quarter, the Ravens got going offensively. First, Manning led his offensive teammates on a eight-play, 68-yard drive, which concluded when FB Sam Gash ran in from the one-yard line to give Baltimore their first lead at 13-10. Denver answered right back with a six-play, 85-yard drive, that concluded when George found WR Eric Moulds wide open for a 45-yard touchdown, and Elam's extra point gave the Broncos back the lead at 17-13. But Bevv's Ravens came right back. Manning engineered another go-ahead drive, this one being a six-play, 58-yard drive that saw Manning hit ace receiver Ed McCaffrey on a 34-yard pass play, and Stover's PAT returned the lead back to Baltimore, with the Ravens now ahead 20-17. The Broncos had one last chance. George led his offensive teammates down into the Ravens' redzone. The offense got stopped cold on two of the first three plays, and then on 4th and 5 from the eight-yard line, King Mur decided to boldly go for the first down and/or the touchdown, rather than settle for the field goal. Bevv's defense held their ground, and the victory was theirs. "I choked" said Castillo after the game. "I don't know if I agreed with King Mur's decision to go for it, rather than kick the field goal, but now that it's over and I won, I'm glad he did" joked Bevv. Bevv's Ravens visit the Metrodome for a second battle with DeMarrio "DMAN" Gray's MFLA Minnesota Vikings, while King Mur's Broncos visit New York to take on Craig DeGraff's Jets.
