February 10, 2001 - Los Angeles MFLA Week Three saw two of the three new MFLA members earn their first victory of the season, and one of them managed to break yet another MFLA record. Oscar Torres, Owner-Coach of the MFLA Oakland Raiders earned his first victory with a decisive 47-28 AFC Conference win over Eric "Skew" Askew's Tennessee Titans. Also, Craig DeGraff, Owner-Coach of the MFLA New York Jets got his first MFLA victory under his belt by virtue of a 24-14 win over DeMarrio "DMAN" Gray's Minnesota Vikings. Jets CB Shawn Springs broke the MFLA record for an interception returned the most yards for a touchdown when he took one back 100 yards. The Jets-Vikings contest earned "Game Of The Week" honors. In other contests, the Detroit Lions, coached by Paul "Sweetness" Neve, continue to dominate defensively as they handed Tom Bout's Washington Redskins a 27-10 defeat; Min "Slayer" Robertson's St. Louis Rams remained undefeated with a close 30-28 victory over Tim "The Bevv" Beverly's Baltimore Ravens; and Kevin "K-Ham" Ham's New England Patriots knocked Fred "King Mur" Castillo's Denver Broncos from the unbeaten ranks with a decisive 45-18 victory. In that game, Broncos WR Joey Galloway had a Kickoff returned 104 yards for a touchdown to set a new MFLA record. The Tampa Bay - Green Bay contest was rescheduled for later in the week. It was Gray's Vikings that looked as though they would score first. The Minnesota offense drove all the way down to within the 5-yard line, but Vikings QB Troy Aikman threw an errant pass, intended for one of his receivers in the endzone, right into the hands of Jets CB Shawn Springs. Springs proceeded to return the stolen pass 100 yards for a touchdown and a new MFLA record (DT Keith Traylor of the MFLA Denver Broncos held the old record of 92 yards). The Jets led 7-0. |
In the 2nd Quarter, the Jets were able to increase their lead when HB Curtis Martin, who finished with 28 yards rushing and 39 yards receiving, caught a 6-yard pass from QB Vinny Testaverde to make the score 14-0 in favor of the Jets. This time though, Minnesota was able to answer. Before the Quarter ended, Aikman led the Minnesota offense downfield again, but this time, he avoided any risky passes. Vikings HB Robert Smith caught a 10-yard pass to cut the Jets lead to 14-7 before the Halftime break. For the most part, the 3rd Quarter was a defensive battle, but Minnesota did manage to get on the scoreboard. After an exchange of possessions, Aikman again led the Minnesota offense downfield. Mixing up his plays, he finally found WR Cris Carter open in the endzone for a 9-yard reception. Carter's touchdown tied the score at 14-14. In the 4th and final Quarter, New York was able to put the game away. Jets Kicker John Hall booted a 46-yard field goal to increase the Jets lead to 17-14. And then, on the ensuing kickoff, Vikings CB and Special Teams player Ray Buchanan had the ball stripped by the Jets Blake Spence, and Jets LB Marvin Jones recovered the loose ball. A few plays later, Testaverde hit WR Raghib "Rocket" Ismail on a 27-yard strike to put the game away with under two minutes remaining. Testaverde finished with 172 yards passing, while the defense had five sacks and four interceptions. The Jets improve to 1-2, while the Vikings drop to 0-3. The Jets will visit Paul "Sweetness" Neve's Detroit Lions next week, a team they played twice in the MFLA Preseason Tourney. The Vikings play host to Eric "Skew" Askew's Tennessee Titans.
