March 24, 2001 - Los Angeles MFLA Week Twelve was the first week that adverse weather could be used by teams with home-field advantage, but all of the games ended up being played in fair weather. Kevin "K-Ham" Ham's MFLA New England Patriots remained undefeated with a 38-26 victory over Oscar Torres' MFLA Oakland Raiders. The Raiders had given K-Ham's Patriots their closest win earlier in the season, losing 28-23 in Week Two. Speaking of close, the most hard fought contest of the weekend was the game between Fred "King Mur" Castillo's MFLA Denver Broncos, and Craig DeGraff's MFLA New York Jets. The Broncos pulled out the victory, 24-16, when CB Sam Madison ran down Jets WR Raghib "Rocket" Ismail, and tackled him at the one-yard line to preserve the victory. That exciting win is our MFLA Week Twelve "Game Of The Week." In other games, Tim "Bigg Badd Bevv" Beverly's MFLA Baltimore Ravens outgunned DeMarrio "DMAN" Gray's MFLA Minnesota Vikings 35-23; Paul "Sweetness" Neve's MFLA Detroit Lions got the best of Min "Slayer" Robertson's MFLA St. Louis Rams 45-20; Jeremy "Jerm Dog" Gardner's MFLA Jacksonville Jaguars earned an unexpected forfeited win by virtue of Brian Smith's "No Show" with his MFLA Tampa Bay Buccaneers; and finally, Jason Lewis' MFLA Green Bay Packers also won by forfeit as a result of Tom Bout's resignation from the league after Week Nine. If there is one coach that has had quite a few closely contested games this season, it's Denver coach "King Mur." He has had probably more "Games Of The Week" than just about any other coach in the league, and this contest was another closely fought battle. In the 1st Quarter, Denver got things going when QB Jeff George led his team on a five play, 75-yard drive. That drive culminated when ace Wide Receiver Joey Galloway scored on a 19-yard catch from George. Kicker Jason Elam's extra point made it 7-0 in favor of the Broncos. Later on in the quarter, DeGraff's Jets drove downfield, but the Broncos defense clamped down on them, and they had to settle for a John Hall field goal which cut Denver's lead to 7-3. In the 2nd Quarter, Denver extended their lead when George got his offense going quick. And I mean QUICK. On the very first play from scrimmage, George threw a bomb to a wide open Galloway for a 68-yard, catch-and-run touchdown. The Broncos now led 14-3. But New York answered back. After a turnover, Jets QB |
Vinny Testaverde led his offensive teammates on an effective drive downfield. The drive was concluded when Testaverde found WR Raghib "Rocket" Ismail on a seven play, 45-yard drive. After Hall's extra point attempt was successful, the Broncos were now ahead 14-10 at the Halftime break. In the 3rd Quarter, Denver scored the touchdown that would put them up for good. George led them on an eight-play, 91-yard drive, that ended when HB Terrell Davis ran in the endzone from the one-yard line. Elam's PAT made it 21-10 about halfway through the 3rd. New York did not just give up though. They came back after Testaverde led them downfield using a good mixture of running plays and passing plays, and after a seven-play, 68-yard drive, Testaverded found a wide open WR Dedric Ward for a 7-yard touchdown reception. Hall's extra point attempt was blocked though, so the score was 21-16 just before the end of the 3rd Quarter. There was very little scoring in the fourth and final quarter, but that's not to say that there wasn't any excitement. After an interception, George led the Denver offense downfield for one last, successful scoring drive. Passing plays were favored over running plays, but unfortunately for Denver, the Jets defense rose to the occasion, and forced them to settle for a field goal. Elam's 45-yard field goal concluded a five-play, 35-yard drive that put the Broncos up 24-16. But the game was not quite over just yet. The Jets got the ball back with :24 remaining on the clock, and Testaverde tried his best to work some last-minute magic. He found Rocket Ismail wide open, and Ismail began to use his speed to make his way towards the endzone for a touchdown, and possibly game-tying two-point conversion. But Ismail proved not to be the only grass burner on the field. Amazingly, CB Sam Madison caught up to Ismail at the one-yard line . . . THE ONE-YARD LINE . . . and tackled him to prevent the touchdown. There was no time remaining after the game-saving tackle. "This game was not for the weak hearted" joked King Mur after his win. "Once again, Galloway performed like a champ, but it was Madison who saved the day." added King Mur. Next up, King Mur's Broncos visit Adelphi Stadium for a rematch with Eric "Skew" Askew's MFLA Tennessee Titans, and DeGraff's Jets have an Open Date/"BYE" during Week Thirteen competition.
