    They've Got A Secret

    Synopsis | Story | Continuity | Quotes | Trivia | Writer | Director | Aliens | Farewell | Guest | Personal

    Brief synopsis:
    Space rescue
Whilst exploring the ship for Peacekeeper devices, D'Argo stumbles across a Peacekeeper shielding device. When he accidentally releases it, he is ejected into space. Aeryn picks him up in her Prowler, but when he returns, both he and Moya are acting very strangely. D'Argo begins reinacting the past, with thoughts of his wife, whilst Moya seems to be affected by some kind of virus.

    The Main Story:
    Sticky situation
The crew being sweeping Moya for anymore Peacekeeper devices. D'Argo discovers a panel, which he pulls off, and ends up falling from Tier 21 downwards. When he comes to a stop, he is sat right next to a Peacekeeper shield. D'Argo being D'Argo, he kicks it, releasing something, and at the same time sending the Luxan into space. Aeryn goes out in her Prowler, and picks him up. Back at Moya, the Luxan survives, but seems to be imagining things.

Whilst D'Argo starts talking to Zhaan as if she is somebody called Lo'Laan, Aeryn and John go to investigate the device D'Argo found. However, before they get there, they are attacked by DRDs who squirt a type of glue at Aeryn, which holds her to the floor.

John goes to Zhaan to sort out a solvent to free Aeryn, but at the same time, they discover that Pilot appears to be losing control of the ship. The DRDs are paying no attention, and gradually ships systems are being devoted to the things only Moya needs, and not those that sustain her passengers.

As John and Aeryn discuss the possibility of the substance released by D'Argo being a virus, Pilot reports that the problems on Moya are deliberate sabotage by DRDs. Pilot then goes completely unconscious. Thankfully, Aeryn seems to have retained some of the knowledge after the time with Pilot DNA inside her. She discovers that Pilot is being gradually starved, and that soon, they will not have sufficient oxygen to breathe.

Whilst Moya plays havoc with life support, D'Argo continues his ramblings, with Zhaan as Lo'Laan and Rygel now playing the part of Jothee. Zhaan realises D'Argo is reliving the past, of his time with his wife Lo'Laan, and son Jothee.

    Moya's little helpers

When John goes to see how D'Argo is, he too is included in the visions of the past, as Macton, clearly a character D'Argo hates as Macton was responsible for the death of Lo'Laan. John has no time though, and goes back to investigate the place D'Argo had visited earlier. When he is caught in a tight spot he has to ask Aeryn to shutdown the DRDs in order to escape. He then goes back to D'Argo, desperately needing better directions.

Once there, John plays out the part of Macton, unlocking the mystery of D'Argo's past. Macton was Lo'Laan's brother, and they were both Peacekeepers. D'Argo was charged with Macton's crime, and Jothee had to be smuggled away for his own safety. All D'argo has left is a holographic projection of the two he loves.

With D'Argo's history played out, he snaps out of his trance, and helps John to find the device again.

    Family

They have to be quick as Aeryn begins cutting Moya's higher functions as a last ditch attempt for survival. Fortunately John stumbles across a room with... a baby! Moya is pregnant, which explains her behaviour. John gets Aeryn to stop cutting and turn the DRDs back on. He then tries to talk to Moya, explaining that they mean no harm, and that they are happy for Moya. The huge leviathan accepts this, and gets everything running again, ships systems, DRDs, and Pilot's supply of nutrients.

To finish off, D'Argo goes to thank Aeryn for saving him in her Prowler. She happily accepts his thanks, and also says that she will never tell anyone of D'Argo's son. The two warriors are certainly gaining great respect for eachother.

    References and continuity:

A Peacekeeper device nearly got the crew caught when it went off during the episode, I, E.T.. That time, they got away with it, but it seems best that they make a full sweep of the ship.

Aeryn was experimented with by Namtar in the episode DNA Mad Scientist. She had Pilot DNA injected into her which appears to have left some kind of imprint allowing Aeryn to understand Moya's systems better.

The DRDs eyes in the dark remind Crichton of old Yosemite Sam cartoons where dark caves would often have eyes blinking open with seemingly nothing attached.

Crichton also refers to Alfred Hitchcock, responsible for famous horror movies such as Psycho in 1960 and many many more.

    Funny or interesting quotes:

Pilot: "He's not on any tier."
    Crichton: "Whaddaya mean?"

As D'Argo gets ejected from the ship, Pilot doesn't panice, and merely states that D'Argo isn't on any tier now.

Aeryn: "I'm going to track down that little droid and rip off both its antennae."
Crichton: "Happy place, go to your happy place."

After getting glued to the floor, Aeryn is fairly annoyed at the DRD responsible, and vows revenge. John however can't see the point and merely mocks her.

    Episode Trivia:

We now know that D'Argo was imprisoned for the murder of his wife, a sebacean called Lo'Laan. However, he was not responsible, but Lo'Laan's brother, Macton was. Somewhere in the galaxy, D'Argo has a son, Jothee.

As D'Argo is at one point on Tier 21, it is clear that Moya has at least that many levels, meaning it truly is a massive ship. However, it is still small in comparison to the Peacekeeper command carrier.

Luxans can survive for a quarter of an arn in deep space and still survive. In D'Argo's case, he actually makes it half an arn, even if it does make him go a little crazy.

The writer of this episode, was Sally Lapiduss who also wrote the following:

    New Aliens:
There were no new aliens in this episode, though we later learn that Moya's child is in fact more than just a Leviathan, see Family Ties.

    Farewell to:

Peacekeeper technology Gradually the crew are taking away the last of the traps aboard Moya, set by the Peacekeepers.

    Guest Stars:
    Centre: Lo'Laan and Jothee
    • Alison Fox as Lo'Laan.
    • Grant Magee as Jothee.

    Personal Opinion:

This is an episode full of plot starters, which makes it even more enjoyable to watch when you come back to it after seeing the later series. The main thing obviously is that Moya will have a child, and as we see, this leads to many adventures, (see Mind The Baby to get some idea).

D'Argo's story is also opening up as we now know that he really was wrongly imprisoned, and also discover his wish for vengeance over the Peacekeeper Macton. This gets resolved in season 4's Mental As Anything. It was also nice to see Aeryn and Crichton working so well together.

Some nice plot and character developments.8/10
