Area 9: The West Side Bed
May 21: The hostas are all popping out of the ground with their normal, unnatural, vigor. I am consistently amazed at the ability of the plants to spring out of the ground, unfurl their leaves, and bring alive an otherwise dead space. They do it so quickly and with so much enthusiasm that it is difficult not to get excited upon seeing them.
There are two kinds of hostas in this bed. The large green circles represent large leaf plants that are a nice bright green. while the two-tone circles represent a shorter hosta who's leaves are more blue with a light green margin. Eventually I will learn the names of the hosta's and be able to give you a better description.
The Juniper used to be absolutely monstrous, now it's just huge. I had to go in and cut out many of the lower branches, and thin the upper layers a bit in order to make the bed usable (and to get it up off of my lawn). There is enough of an opening underneath it that the kids use it as a snow fort in the winter.

Initial: This bed doesn't have much. The giant Juniper is taking up most of the space, although I have planted a row of smaller hostas underneath it. I am waiting to see if they will be coming up this year, and will get their locations recorded when they do. Behind the Juniper is a cluster of lilacs and a beauty bush which is in a bad way. I discovered it last year when I was cleaning out this area and will be trying to bring it back a bit.
