Area 2: The TongueMay 23: The Tongue has filled in wonderfully. The show of daffodils was fantastic. The tri-coloured iris' are coming out slowly, not an impressive display, but once you notice them it's hard to look away. I broke up a couple of Hostas last fall and planted a bunch in amongst the dog's-tooth violets, they are coming up nicely. The Redbud seems to have profited from a brutal pruning I gave it last year, and flowered completely this year with some new growth showing at the base and strong leaves forming. The Lady's Mantle is actually taking on it's signature 'neat mound' arrangement this year, after a couple of years of looking pretty scraggly. In a nutshell, I'm pleased so far.I'll be adding all of the Hostas to the map below shortly, and a new photo can be expected sometime in the near future.
Sited on the west side of the backyard, this bed is by far my most mature, busiest, and most diverse bed. There are very few periods where something in this bed isn't in bloom. As you can see from the plant map, trying to record the locations of everything in here can be quite a task. A great many things were moved around in here last year as well. A number of Hostas were added to the back of the bed, the daylilies were divided, some irises went in somewhere, etc. What I plan on doing is to allow the viewer to chose between Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter maps. However, these are going to be constructed over the next growing season, so will become slowly available. I ask for your patience and understanding when it comes to this bed. In the meantime, here are a few photos from either last summer, or the summer before. It'll give you a sense of what is in here later in the season.
Thanks for stopping by, Brett Previous Entries: April 21: Here is the Tongue as it looked last week. The daffodils, some tulips, and the dayilies are in evidence. Also making an appearance are the grape hyacinths, crocus', and pushkinia. Also, behind the Redbud, a patch of Dog's Tooth Violets has begun to show. Nothing worth speaking of, but it's getting greener. ![]() |
