Area 4: The East Side Bed
May 23: Again with the changes. I've moved the Rose of Sharon into the front yard (area 15). The Serviceberries have bloomed and faded. If you've never seen this it is fantastic, the tree looks like a giant snowball, and they blossoms drop so fast that for a day or two it looks as if it is snowing in the backyard. My wife managed to get a photo of Adria being snowed on by one of the trees, hopefully it'll turn out so that I can post it for you. The snowdrops made an impressive appearance as did a number of Hyacinths that I had forgotten about.Unfortunately, after the first burst of colour from this bed, it falls into a unsightly state of disarray. I am always hesitant to touch it, because we can sometimes get a nice crop of red poppies to spring up. My patience runs very thin with this side however, and I'm thinking that this may be the year that I dig up the entire bed and replant everything (but then I've thought that every year). We'll see.
This bed runs along the chainlink fence on the east side of my backyard. It has been much neglected since we moved in here, but last fall I was able to get it cleaned up a little.The serviceberry trees give a wonderful yield, but you have to fight the racoons, birds, possums, and other critters away long enough to pick some. I had to mix them with blueberries in order to have enough for just a couple pies last year.
The Rose of Sharon (aka Lucas' Tree) was planted in commemoration of my son's birthday. It is young but is surviving.
Also, surrounding the topmost Dwarf Spruce is a patch of Poppies. They have come up each year, but have suffered being weeded, mowed down, sprayed, flooded, and dried out. I'm hoping that they will come back again, but I'm not going to hold my breath.
Other things have been planted in and around this bed, but since I was generally ignoring it I won't know where anything is until it comes up. Expect this page to be edited a few times over the season.
