Area 8: The Garage Bed

An early season view
April 21: I grabbed quick picture of this area just to use up the roll of film. The only things above ground right now are the daffodils, a hyacinth further back, and the budding lilacs. Everything else is still under mulch, or has died.

In the coldframe area I have moved the potted seeds into tighter groups, and begun to collapse the frames. This has become my new catch-all area while I've been working on the other areas. It'll get cleaned up after the other projects are under way.

The Garage Bed

This bed has been the catch-all for the twigs, branches, leaves, etc which came out of the front yard, but didn't quite make it to the back. In the Spring of 2000 I decided to try and make something of it. The soil was turned to a depth of about 18", half-made compost was mixed throughout, and a thick layer of leafy mulch added to the top. The plants shown in the diagram are a couple that I am sure of. There is also a bunch of Dafodils, a Purple Coneflower (Echinacea), Columbine "McKana Giant" (Aquilegia 'McKana Giant') and more that didn't get recorded in my notes. As they come up I will be adding them to the diagram, as with all of the beds.

Cold Frames
Above is a winter photo of the bed with my cold frames in place. For more details regarding the cold frames - go here.
