I decided that the obvious way to arranged restaurants was by price. Afterall, we are students, and money is the most important factor in deciding where we eat. In the following pages, you will find my ratings of restaurants in the surronding area of LSU. You might not agree with them, but I do. Organization Chart (Price includes tax and
tip):
$$ Near Campus: The Chimes: Most of the sandwiches are about $7. The entrees are about $7-$11. It is located right at the North Gate of campus on Highland. It's open late. The negative is that it's smokey and loud. Like Canes and Louie's, this is one restaurant you should eat at before leaving LSU. Serrano's: This Mexican restaurant is located next to The Chimes. I've never eaten here, and don't plan on it. The few people who have been have not been impressed. Maybe it's good, so if you like Mexican it's worth a shot. Saigon: Vietnamese restaurant. It's located right by the Baskin Robin on the corner of State and Highland. Went there for lunch recently, and it was very good. I'm craving it now. The Viatnamese egg rolls are great. Lunch is about $6, but dinner is about $10-$15. Try the sauce on the table, it's good. The food overall is light, but filling. Great service. Try it if you have a taste for Vietnamese or are in the mood for something different.. DeAngelo's: Probably the best pizza in Baton Rouge, though M's Cafe is my favorite. It is located on Burbank and Lee right next door to the Winn Dixie. Their calzones are delicious. You can split an extra large pizza starting at $11. That's only 5.50/person. You can order it and pick it up too. They have a second location on Bluebonnet near the Mall of Louisiana. Try it, go back, but watch your weight! Brewbacher's: There's on on Nicholson and one on Government (I think). I ate here once. Nothing special. They are supposed to have the best hamburgers in Baton Rouge. I got shrimp, and it was okay. Shouldn't cost you more than $10. Portabello's: This Italian restaurant on 1072 N. Lee across from Mike Anderson's is pretty good. The pizzas are good and the entrees are as well. Try the portabello mushroom sandwich, it's good, though $6 is high to pay for a sandwich with one mushroom on it. Mostly students work here, and you can place orders to go. Try it if you want gourmet pizza and you're sick of DeAngelo's, or if you want some none-chain Italian. Lone Star Steak House: This chain is a ripoff I think. I have never had a good meal there and their peanuts aren't good. Avoid it. If you want a steak, go to Outback across the street. It's located on South Acadian just past Walmart. The Caterie - located on Acadian across the street from the Walmart near campus, this restaurant/bar/pool table hall has decent food, but nothing to write home about. They sometimes have live bands. If you like that type of place, I guess it would be a good place to pick up a bite to eat. Open late. Not Near Campus: M's Fine and Mellow Cafe: This is my favorite pizza in the world. It's primarily a jazz cafe, and you sometimes have to pay a cover at night. During the day, I think they have a pizza buffet. It is located on 3rd Street I believe in downtown BR. The one negative is that at night, it can be a rather smokey place. It can be a neat place to hang out. A large pizza starts at about $10. You can split it. Superior Grill: Mexican food located on Government I think. I tried it in Shreveport, and didn't find it extraordinary. It was good, but still, it was chain food. Chain food sucks (except Outback and Macaroni Grill). Don't spend your money on it. Fuddrucker's: Located on Corporate near the theatre, they have some delicious burgers. It's about $7 a burger. Very good. If you like a good burger, check it out. Tell them your name is Jerel. Ryan's Steakhouse - this is a chain steak and salad bar place. It's alright if you want a cheap steak and good rolls. I went here about 10 years ago. I don't know where it is, but here's the address: 910 S. Range Ave. TGIFriday's: One of the worst, overrated restaurants. Why would anyone pay to eat frozen food? It's like going out to a restaurant and paying 4 times what you would pay for a frozen meal. I highly recommend that you stay away from this chain as well as most chains. Located at 5837 Essen Lane in case you wondered. Ruby Tuesday's - Okay, do we have to go through the chain restaurant deal again? Nasty. Don't eat here unless you have a problem with good food. It's located on the corner of Corporate and College by Waffle House and Wendy's. La Madeliene: This French bakery and restaurant is a chain, but isn't half bad. The food is fresh, the salads are good, and you get free fresh baked bread. I like going in for a Caesar salad, water, and free bread. Do that, and it's less than $5. Try their delicious pastries if you want something sweet. Two locations: 7615 Jefferson Hwy. and 6401 Bluebonnet Blvd. Great Wall: located at 3084 College Drive, this Chinese buffet has a loyal following amoung many LSU students. I've never been, but need to go. Damon's: located by the theatre off Corporate on Citiplace Ct, this chain sits next to Across the Border and Macaroni Grill. I would suggest you go to Macaroni Grill rather than eat here if you are in the area. Across the Border: another chain like Damon's, this Mexican food is supposedly okay. I don't recommend it, mostly because it's a chain and Macaroni Grill is next door. Try it I suppose. Albasha's: This is a Greek/Lebanese restaurant located near Macaroni Grill and Across the Border. Adam says it's excellent, especially the chicken. It's about $10 he says. Macaroni Grill: this is one of the only chains that I like. The reason for that is that they serve fresh food. Some of their specials would push this restaurant into the $$$ category, but if you stick to their regular menu items, you can eat for about $10. Free refills and as much of their heavenly bread and olive oil make this a place you need to go to more than once. It has a nice atmosphere and some of the servers sing opera while you're there. If you have a taste for chain food and good food (is that possible?), check it out. Good date restaurant. Chili's: this is perhaps the epitome of the terrible chain restaurant. There's nothing here I like. I'm not saying I wouldn't eat the food. I'm saying that if you're going to spend almost $10 to go out to eat, I promise you that you can find something much better. I can't recommend one menu item. If your friends want to eat here, try to persuade them into a better place. It's located on College right before the interstate, not that you cared. Ninfa's: This Mexican food is supposed to be one of the better Mexican restaurants in New Orleans. Price about $10. Since I'm not a huge fan of Mexican food (way too unhealthy), don't expect to see me there. Applebee's: one step above Chili's is Applebee's. Really, guys, why eat here? This is frozen food! The one close to campus closed, but there are locations at 4808 S. Sherwood Forest and 9702 Airline Hwy. Past Times: This is located near downtown, though I'm not sure exactly where. Take Nicholson and follow it to downtown. I don't know! Supposed to have good greasy food like pizzas and burgers. Sounds like a good place before football games if you aren't tailgating. Semolina's: This Italian restaurant is located off College before the interstate. There's also one on Highland I think. Check the phonebook for address or call them for directions. I've only eaten at the one in New Orleans, and I didn't particularly like it. Most people, though, like the pasta. Watch what you get or it will turn into a $$$ visit. Louisiana Pizza Kitchen: they have thin
crust pizza with a unique texture. I liked it. There is one
on Corporate near Jefferson. There was one off I-10, but it closed
down.
