Eating on Campus
There’s Highland Cafeteria near Laville. Pentagon Cafeteria is way over on the other side of
campus by that big high rise, Kirby Smith.  The Union also offers food at all three meals.  The Magnolia Room (Plantation Room) and Faculty Club offer lunch on weekdays.  The Laville Food Emporium and the Pentagon Convenience Store are open during most of the day and offer convenience store food (but they are both very overpriced).  Domino's is located in the Laville Food Emporium.  It is open for lunch and until about midnight.  There are also places to eat in CEBA and the Law Center, but the other places on campus to eat are very small and not very good.  Beware of the strange hours at the cafeterias.  Also remember that the cafeterias are nasty on weekends.  From Friday night to Sunday night, they serve nasty leftovers.  Isn't that wrong to charge full price for leftovers?  One more thing, on weekends, only one cafeteria is open.  The cafeteria opened on the weekend rotates by semester.  Check to see which one is open in the Fall.  There are also coke and candy vending machines throughout campus.  Some of these take Tiger Express.  As all vending machines, they are expensive.

Breakfast:

Highland: Highland’s breakfast is the same everyday.  Scrambled eggs, fried eggs, boiled eggs, grits, nasty little biscuits, sausage, bacon, ham, and potato hash, that’s all the cooked food.  There’s also some pretty bad fruit, but sometimes thebananas and apples are good.  Bagels and toast can be made, as well as the Belgian waffles.
Sometimes, though, the waffle machine is hard to get to because others use it.

Pentagon: On the other side of campus is a better option at Pentagon.  Their breakfast always seems better and fresher.  They have big, good biscuits, as well as donuts freshly made.  I don’t know if it’s worth the walk if you’re pressed for time.  If you do have time and want to walk, try it.  Both cafeterias offer cereal, milk, oj, and apple juice at breakfast.  Oh yeah, both are all you can eat.

Union: If you have Paw Points, Tiger Express, or cash, you can always go to the Union.  They have great
breakfast.  Ms. T will serve it to you too.  It’s only about 2 dollars without a drink.  Be careful to not get the large OJ unless you want to pay 2.50.  I go here when I want to treat myself or have an exam coming up.

Lunch:

Highland: Lunch is where Highland makes some ground.  If you get lucky, you’ll get be there on Chicken Tender day.  Be warned, though: the line can get pretty vicious!  Some people take 15 tenders in one passing.  I don’t know how good it is for the vegeterian.  Sometimes, the vegetables are good, sometimes not.  The rolls are usually decent.  You will always have the option of sandwitches, pizza, hotdogs, and hamburgers.  The salad bar is always open, but I don’t like it that much.  Usually, you’ll find something worth eating.  Drinks are limited to soft drinks.  Coke, Sprite, etc...  No juice unfortunately.

Pentagon: Lunch at Pentagon is sometimes not good.  You can always get sandwitches, pizza, hotdogs,
hamburgers, fried chicken, and mashed potatoes.  On the other side, you can get one or two entrees.  Sometimes good, sometimes not.  Catfish Menuire (sp?) is good.  They usually have about 4 vegetables which are pretty good too.  Drinks are the same at Highland.  All you can eat at both places, too.  The problem with Pentagon is that the lines can be terrible.  Every day if you hit it at the wrong spot, you could be in line for 20 minutes.

Union: Lunch in the Union can be good.  Pizza Hut is pretty nasty, but if you want a cheap meal, you can get the breadsticks (3 for $1.20, 5 for $1.90).  There’s also a Mexican food area.  Not my pick.  Then there’s a good section with good cafeteria food.  The chicken jambalaya is great.  The vegetables and other entrees are good.  Cost - about $5 for the combo.  There’s also Chick-Fil-A.  Good salads, chicken, and sandwitches.  A little pricey, but good.  Upper Crust is a sandwich shop.  They are pretty good and about $4 each.  The Union is a happening place during lunch.  Don’t eat here at night unless you have to or you like silence.  The Union is absolutely dead after 4 or 5.

The Magnolia Room aka Plantation Room: this is the classy place to eat lunch on campus for students.  The Faculty Club has a good restaurant, but students usually don’t go and it’s more expensive.  The Magnolia Room is located on the upper floor of the Union and is open only on weekdays for lunch.  It has good food, and it’s a buffet.  It has the same menu every week.  Entrees change day by day.  Fried catfish and jambalaya is on Friday, my favorite!  A waiter serves you, so tip him a dollar or two.  The dessert is good too.  Cost: $7 without tip.  They do accept Tiger Express and Paw Points.

Dinner:

Cafeterias:  Basically the same as lunch at both Highland and Pentagon.  They have some funky hours though.  Start serving at 4:30 and stop at 7.  That’s not right for students.  All the hours are messed up.  Breakfast ends at 9 or 9:30.  Lunch ends at 1.  If you get there after 7, you’re stuck with cold pizza, sandwiches, or hamburgers.  Get there before 7.  Drinks are the same as at lunch.  There are soft drinks and milk, but no juice.  Occasionally, there will be a Steak Night or Shrimp Night.  These are pretty good, and I recommend you go.  You don’t get all the steak or shrimp you want though.  The Chef Nights are usually not good.  Don’t expect great chefs.

Domino's: Not a bad idea if you're sick of cafeteria food.  There is usually a daily special on the pizzas.  If there isn't I wouldn't buy one because it will end up costing at least $10 for one pizza.  For that price, I order off campus  to Papa John's.  Sometimes, one topping larges are $5.  If you live in Laville you don't have to pay for delivery because it's right next door in the Laville Food Emporium.  Girls, be careful at night.  Guys too.  If you get it delivered, please tip the person.  Oh yeah, they usually have a 5 large one topping larges special for $25.  Good deal if you're having some friends over.  If you're pressed for money, order their Twisty Bread.  It's about $2 is pretty filling and good.  Whatever you do, don't call it Crazy Bread unless you want the manager to yell at you.

Coffee:

Cafe Vieux Carre: this cool hangout is located in the French House right by West Laville.  It's relaxing and if you don't mind a little noise, is a good study spot.  Opened until midnight on weeknights, it offers good coffee, good beignets, and good bagels.  Don't try their sandwiches -- they are disgusting.

St. Alban’s Church Coffee - I didn’t know what to call it.  They have a coffee shop in the St. Alban Episcopal church on the corner of Highland and Dalrymple.  The sanctuary is beautiful and a very calming place to go during troubled times.

Overall, you’re getting ripped off with your meal plan in my opinion.  You pay almost $10 a day on the food if you get the big plan.  It’s not that bad, but I gave up with my meal plan after this first year and started cooking on my own and eating out at the many nearby food places.  I've spent about the same amount and have had much better food.
