Religion
Religion is a vital part to one's life.
I think it to be wise and useful to join a religious group as soon as you
arrive on campus. Be careful when choosing your group as several
groups that have been labeled as "cults" (a word meaning a system
of religous worship that is often misused) are around.
Groups On Campus:
University Presbyterian Church (USA):
This friendly and welcoming PCUSA church is
my favorite when on campus. There is not an active college group
anymore, but they do host a faculty-student luncheon on the first Sundays
of each month usually. I highly recommend it as some of the faculty
members there are very nice, informative, and fun. The services are
nice. Sunday services are at 8:30 and 11 AM. It is located
on Dalrymple Drive just off campus on Church Row.
University Methodist Church:
University Methodist is a welcoming Methodist
church located right next to University Presbyterian. Services are
held on Sundays at 8:30 and 11 AM. They also have an active college
group called the Wesley Foundation. It is a good group to get involved
with and they meet after the 11 service and for Chapel on Wednesdays at
8 PM.
The Uniting Campus Ministries:
This was the Methodist-Presbyterian student
group that met at the TUCM building on Chimes St. behind the two churches.
However, it closed after 17 years in 1999. It's a shame it no longer
exists.
Chapel on Campus:
This is a non-denominational group that is
very popular. I believe they have a service on Thursday night.
They have stuff just about every day and services on Sunday of course.
This is rather conservative and more charasmatic than the Catholic, Presbyterian,
Methodist, and Episcopalean groups. Located on Dalyrmple across from
the Methodist church.
Christ the King Parish and Catholic Student
Center:
This is the biggest religious group on campus.
The building on the corner of Dalrymple and Highland is beautiful as it
just underwent a multi-million dollar renovation last year. I know
they have services for students Sunday nights, but you should check with
them if you want more info.
St. Alban's Episcopalean Church:
This Anglican church is beautiful and peaceful.
You should go in it on a sunny day to see the beautiful stained glass.
There are services there Sunday morning and a Eucharist Sunday night at
6. After the Eucharist, the student group gets together. There's
a coffee shop there as well. The sanctuary is a good place to go
any time of the day if you need a place of silence.
Baptist Collegiate Ministries (BCM):
This group is extremely active. They
have stuff to do every day, but their big draw is Thursday Night Together
(TNT) which is on Thursday nights at 7 and 9 I believe. It is a very
active and loud service which lasts about 1-2 hours. You will stand
a lot to sing. They also have a lunch once a week that is good and
only costs $1. The BCM sent the largest collegiate mission trip in
the nation last year to Mexico. Each year the group sends hundreds
of students to different parts of Mexico for the week of Spring Break.
Each person I know who has gone on it has said it was fantastic.
Located on Highland next to the Catholic Student Center (near the corner
of Dalrymple).
There are other campus groups for Lutherans,
Pentacostals, Reformed, and Mormons, but I don't know enough to post about
them here.
Hillel Jewish Group:
This Jewish student group meets once a week
and often goes to a local synagogue to worship on Friday nights.
Islamic Center of Baton Rouge:
It is located on 820 West Chimes St.
