Dorm Stuff
Meeting People:
Living in a dorm can be one of the most rewarding
experiences of college. It can also be a lonely experience.
Let it be the former of the two. How do you do that? Meet people.
Get out of your "comfort zone" and meet people. Go to programs
in your dorm. These are usually pretty entertaining, good places
to meet people, and free. There's free food there, so how else can
I persuade you to go? You can meet them other ways. Just hanging
out in the lobby (when people aren't studying there) or going over to a
stranger's room can spark a life-long friendship. Meeting people
in dorms is the best way to make friends in my opinion. With the
Honors College in East Laville, I think it will be even better. You
can also get involved in hall government. Elections are pretty early
in the Fall. Intramurals is another great way to meet people.
Find out more in the intramural section below.
Cooking:
I've survived in the dorm three years, two
of those years with no meal plan. For your room, a frig is a necessity
if you want to prepare your own meals. A microwave is convenient,
but there are a good number of them in the kitchenettes in the dorm.
There are two ovens in East Laville, but neither is very reliable.
They don't cook evenly, so don't expect great meals out of them.
There are electic ranges to cook on. These are good to use.
It is illegal due to fire danger to have toasters, grills, hotplates, George
Forman grills, etc. For some reason, though, irons are allowed.
Doesn't make sense, but you'll come to see that a lot of the rules they
have don't.
Computer Labs, Phone, Internet:
see what I wrote in the
Laundry:
Your most convenient way to wash clothes is
to use the washing machines and dryers in your dorm. Sometimes, especially
in the girl dorms, you have to wait. You will pay 75 cents to wash
and 75 cents to dry. Neither the
washers or dryers work well, so if you have
an option to go home and wash, use it. In East Laville, the laundry
room is in the basement.
The Lobby:
Okay, this is a social area. However,
it's also a STUDY AREA. The East Laville lobby has long been held
as one of the best study areas on campus. Last year, this small group
of about 5 thought they could do whatever they wanted, and the lobby's
study atmosphere slowly deteriorated. Please be respectful of those
who study there. Turn the TV off if someone's studying. Be
as quiet as possible. Treat them as if you had to study in the lobby
the night before the biggest test of your life because your roommate was
having a party in your room and you couldn't study there. During
the day, the lobby is pretty quiet, but at night, it becomes very active.
Remember to enjoy yourself, but be respectful.
Bathrooms and Showers:
These are community in Laville. For
girls, I've heard that you'll have to wait in line sometimes during the
morning. To facilitate this problem, please shower at less popular
times if you can. For guys, you might have to wait every now and
then, but not too often. If there is a line, be quick in the shower.
I've never had a problem with hot water being scarce, but according to
some girls, it is a problem. Bring your own towel, soap, shampoo,
and flip flops to the shower. Using the toilet should be a quick
process. Please do not throw stuff in the toilet that does not belong
there. We as a dorm will have to pay for the damages you cause.
PLEASE FLUSH THE TOILET WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED. It is so annoying
when the jerk before you didn't flush the toilet. How rude is that?
Noise:
Again, respect your neighbors. Don't
turn up your stereo loud because you think others will think you're cool.
Most of us think you're childish when you do that. Don't yell out
your windows at night either. Respect.
Front Desk:
Laville will have a full-time desk worker.
The one during the day will not be a student :-(
At the desk, you can check out stuff with
your Student Activity Card (costs about $15? and allows you to rent movies,
VCRs, pool equipment, vaccuum, etc. You can buy one at the desk.).
You can also report things wrong with your room, hall, or people.
Log complaints here. If you can't find your key, you can get a replacement
here ($50? if they have to change your lock). If your roommate locks
you out of your room or temporarily can't find your key, you can rent a
replacement key for 30 minutes from the desk. This will cost you
$5 and if you don't bring it back within 30 minutes, you will be charged
for a new lock. Don't complain that it costs too much. If you
lose your key, it's your fault, not the desk assistant's.
Your RA and SRA:
Fortunately for you, you have good RAs and
a great SRA in East Laville. These people can help you in the case
of emergency, and are often available to give advice. But hey, you
don't need advice now that you've found this page! Adam Simoneaux
is your SRA, his website is located at http://www.geocities.com/asimon5
It's a great site, so check it out.
Intramurals:
East Laville as well as other dorms compete
in the intramural league on campus. The East-West Laville teams have
traditionally been the best dorm teams. If you love sports or even
have a passing interest in them,
talk to Tim the basement RA. He is the
man when it comes to intramurals. You can also talk to your RA to
find out more. We have teams in just about any sport you could think
of. Sports we play include flag football, basketball, softball, volleyball,
and soccer. I think all of these teams are co-ed and mens.
