Tamahome is the first of the Suzaku Seishi to appear. He saves Miaka and Yui from a group of slave traders but abandons them when they can’t pay him for his services. Your first impression of him is greedy and selfish, but his intentions for always wanting money become clearer as the story progresses. He is actually an exceptionally caring individual who is strong and quick in both mind and body. He promises to protect Miaka before she ever becomes the Suzaku no Miko, demonstrating the truth of his chivalrous character.
He would seem almost too perfect if not for his preoccupation with making money. He sometimes hides his deep loyalty and affection for his friends behind a selfish or stoic outward appearance. He is also very intelligent although he sometimes hides that as well behind some comical antics. He won’t hesitate to stand up for what he believes in or to sacrifice himself for his loved ones. He’s tall, dark (kind of), handsome ^_^ as well as sharp, witty, intelligent, and funny. Like I said, the perfect man. No wonder it takes only a handful of episodes before Miaka realizes she’s in love with him!
His greatest flaw, his desire for money, actually stems from a rather noble cause. The money he makes goes towards his family’s well being. His father is sick, his mother died birthing his youngest sister, and he is the oldest of five children so he carries the responsibilities of caring for them. To the audience’s horror, his entire family is later killed by Suboshi of the Seiryu Seishi. Suboshi believes his twin, Amiboshi, who had been impersonating Chiriko to thwart the Suzaku no Miko’s attempt to summon Suzaku, had been killed by the Suzaku Seishi. He therefore took his revenge by murdering Tamahome’s family. After that, Tamahome comes to the conclusion that his only purpose now lies in Miaka.
