Mitsukake appears as the sixth member of the Suzaku Seishi. Miaka, Hotohori, and Nuriko meet him during their search for a person rumored to be able to revive the dead (they thought Tasuki was the dead former leader of the Mt. Reikaku bandits, not yet having realized that Genrou was really Tasuki). They enter a village plagued by a mysterious disease. Miss Shoka is the woman who can bring people back to life after the disease kills them. To their misfortune, Miaka contracts the disease and in search of help, they implore Myojuan, who was once the physician of the village but had moved into the forest a year earlier, for his help. He turns them away, announcing that he no longer accepted patients. Miaka is in terrible pain from fever and it appeared as if the only way to save her would be to kill her right away and allow Miss Shoka to revive her. Hotohori tries to, but he cannot kill the one he loves. He pleads for her to hold on a little longer so that he can try again to beg Myojuan for help. When Myojuan hears that Miss Shoka is alive, he cannot believe it as she had died a year earlier from the same disease. Shoka had been his love. She had become sick while he was away healing someone else in another village and he wasn’t able to return to her in time to save her. He ends up cleaning himself up and coming to the rescue, using his healing powers to destroy the shikokou demon that had possessed Miss Shoka and set her spirit free.
Mitsukake is a very large man with an equally large heart. He has a cat named Tama (coincidentally the nickname Nuriko gave Tamahome), who is not only his pet, but his companion. He is one of the most underappreciated members of the Suzaku Seishi (in the Fushigi Yuugi fan world), but he plays a vital role in the group. He is usually quiet, well-mannered, and even tempered, which is why he may be easily overlooked, especially in the presence of Tasuki’s bellows. He’s a gentle giant who cares for all forms of life. Without him, Miaka’s broken arm would have taken much longer to heal, Tamahome would have died from being run through by Hotohori, and Tasuki would have suffered his injuries much much longer than the few days he had to wait for Mitsukake’s powers to return after having had to heal Miaka and Tamahome. Beneath Mitsukake’s expressionless exterior lies a very big-hearted and deep man who loves to care for others. He is also just as courageous as the others in his willingness to protect the Suzaku no Miko.
