Miaka, the Suzako no Miko is the heroine of Fushigi Yuugi. She is an incredibly naïve and trusting girl although also extremely sweet. Those aren’t such horrible flaws though as they are also her strengths; her greatest flaw is her appetite which can only be described as gluttonous. She always believes in the goodness of people even when they turn against her and she isn’t one to give up easily on people either. Her strength as a person becomes clearer as her journey continues in finding the rest of the Suzaku Seishi and summoning Suzaku. She maintains close relationships with each of her protectors which is why it pains her to see them risk their lives over and over to protect hers. In fact, she tried a few times in the beginning to leave them behind in her quest so that they and other innocent people wouldn’t get hurt. Her loyalty to her friends is unwavering, exemplified in her continued concern for Yui even though they stand on opposite sides. She always puts up a cheerful façade in order to comfort those who worry for her as well as continuing to remain optimistic, realizing that many besides those directly around her see her as their salvation from an impending war.
Her closest relationship is, of course, with Tamahome, who first rescued her and Yui from the slave traders when they first appeared in the book. He continues to appear when she needs him the most and through their trials, they come to realize how much they love each other. I became aggravated at how many times those two kept turning away from and then back to each other, but neither of them could turn their backs from the way they felt in the end.
In order to summon Suzaku, she must remain pure in body and strong in spirit. She was willing to give up her love for Tamahome to ensure her body remained pure, but the strength of her spirit was tested time and again. She remained true to her friends, though, and with their help, her will prevailed.
