Nuriko "Court Warrior" or "Palace Warrior" Real Name: Ryuuen CHOU Nickname: "Gay-boy" Star Pattern: The Sea Serpent (Hydra) Symbol: "yanagi" - Willow Birthdate: 3/10 Birthplace: Eiyo, Capital of Konan Empire Age: 18 Height: 166cm ~5'5" Hair Color: Purple Eye Color: Brown Blood Type: B Family: Parents, one older brother (Rokou), one younger sister (Kourin, deceased) Seishi Power: Superhuman Strength Location of character: left side of chest by the heart Interests: dressing up (or cross-dressing, hehe), being fashionable, and Hotohori-sama...oh and picking on Miaka ^_^ Flaws: utter selflessness (also a strength, of course) Seiyuu: Sakamoto Chika
Nuriko is the third member of the Suzaku Seishi to appear in the story. He first appears as a woman, a member of the emperor’s court. He saves Miaka and Tamahome from being crushed under a fallen building, nonchalantly flinging away large pieces of debris. He appears at first to be snobby, pushy, and all-together irritating. He even tries to take Tamahome away from Miaka. But it is revealed that he was only rude because he was jealous of Hotohori’s affections for Miaka. He thinks himself in love with the emperor, even though he is a man. Once he finds out, though, that Miaka has no interest in Hotohori, he does his best to get Tamahome and Miaka together so Hotohori is left for him. They find out soon afterwards, though, about his gender, but accept him for who he is nonetheless.
He would do anything to make his friends happy, although he loves picking on Miaka—-with no malice, of course. He is physically strong, but is also strong in spirit. He constantly offers emotional support for his friends, and for Miaka, often acting like an older brother (or sister) to her. Nuriko holds a dear spot in my heart because of his carefree, playful, fun, optimistic, and outgoing personality. He is one of my favorite anime characters of all time.
We find out much later why he chose to live his life as a woman. Nuriko had a younger sister named Kourin whom he loved dearly. The two were so alike in looks and voice that they were often mistaken as twins. When he was ten, Nuriko was in the town and Kourin, racing after him, was trampled by a runaway horse. Nuriko refused to accept his sister’s death and so, he dressed up in her clothes and decided to live on in her place, taking her name for his own (when we first meet him, he introduces himself as Kourin). Through his affection for Miaka and his role as a Suzaku Seishi, he is finally able to accept his sister’s death as well as accept himself and the great responsibility and fortune of being one of Miaka’s Seishi.
