Chichiri is the fourth of the Suzaku Seishi to appear. Chichiri is one of the most powerful of the Suzaku Seishi. He rescues Miaka by pulling her out of harm’s way when she would have been attacked by a shower of arrows from Kutou assassins. He then disappears into his hat, leaving a bewildered Miaka behind. Miaka decides to keep the hat, and when she is later attacked again, he reappears and saves her. Chichiri takes his responsibility as one of her protectors extremely serious (as do all her Seishi), but his insight and perceptiveness make him an exceptional character. He is very considerate and understanding, often offering his wisdom and counsel when needed. He is respectful of everyone and in turn, gains their respect with ease. He is sometimes playful as well, making him a person of many mysteries. He is a great listener, often being the one Miaka turns to when needing someone to talk to. Chichiri is almost always agreeable and selfless, looking always for what’s in the best interest of those around him. Since he is the oldest of the Seishi, he is a source of spiritual and elder support.
Chichiri can be both silly and serious. He appears constantly happy because he wears a smiling mask. His speech is also curious in that he adds "no da" to the end of almost everything he says. The mask is to disguise his true emotions and make him seem continually cheerful. Beneath the mask though, is an enigmatic and complex person. He has a scar across his left eye, a continual reminder of his mysterious and tragic past. Little to nothing is known about his childhood. When Chichiri was nineteen, he had a best friend named Hikou and a fiancé named Kouran. All three were the greatest of friends. But then Chichiri discovers Hikou and Kouran kissing one day and is later told by his lover that she can never marry him. Chichiri, believing her to have chosen Hikou over him, confronted Hikou and a fight ensued. It was during this fight that Chichiri lost his eye. Hikou died, swept away by the flooded river, and Chichiri carried the guilt and pain over Hikou’s betrayal and death with him ever since. He became a monk and traveled for a time before going to stay at Mount Taikyoku under Taiitsu-kun’s tutelage for the three years before Miaka’s arrival in the book.
