Hotohori is the fourth emperor of Konan and the second of the Suzaku Seishi to appear. He first meets Miaka when she approaches his procession to ask him for a jewel from his crown to pay for Tamahome’s aid, offering him the excuse that since the emperor was extremely wealthy, he could spare one jewel. She is almost killed by the guards when they think she was attacking him but is rescued, of course, by Tamahome. She then suddenly emits a bright red light and disappears before reappearing again. She is arrested, along with Tamahome. Hotohori believes her to be the legendary Suzaku no Miko and befriends her in disguise to ascertain her intentions. It is only after she agrees to become the Suzaku no Miko, however, that he reveals to her and Tamahome that he is a Suzaku Seishi.
His father, the third emperor, died when he was fourteen so he assumed the throne at a very young age. Like one of his counselors said, he took his responsibilities very seriously for one so young. He is a gentle and quiet man, but when fighting for his empire and for those he loves, he can become quite formidable. He is an excellent swordsman and despite his truly kind and gentle heart, is a impressive warrior and politician. Even though he is emperor, he treats everyone equally, which speaks of his fair and respectful nature.
Hotohori is an extremely beautiful man. In fact, Miaka mistakes him for a woman when she first meets him. His greatest flaw is that he is incredibly vain. He always accepts a compliment and even thinks himself more beautiful than the women of his court. Even though he is quick to accept a compliment, he doesn’t flaunt his beauty in others faces. He may love his looks, but he not at all selfish. He would give anything to protect those he cares for.
Ever since he'd first heard about the Suzaku no Miko, he had imagined her as the perfect woman; someone who would love him as a person, and not as the emperor. Even though he was constantly surrounded by his servants and counselors, he was lonely. He imagined the girl from another world as the one who would end his loneliness and free him. Therefore, when Miaka appeared, he fell in love with her and continued to love her despite the knowledge that Miaka was in love with Tamahome.
He at first vies for Miaka’s love, even going so far as to raise his sword against Tamahome. But eventually, his caring nature leads him to realize how much Miaka and Tamahome love each other and despite his feelings, he does all he can to make sure they are happy. In being a Suzaku Seishi, he gains eternal friends and realizes he is no longer alone.
