There was another student named Daniel Tompkins so he added D. to avoid confusion. He went on to become a New York Supreme Court justice, Governor, and Vice-President of U.S. He was quite a character.
He was born on 21 June 1774 at White Plains, Westchester, NY.
He was the son of Jonathan Griffin Tompkins and Sarah Hyatt.

Samuel Tompkins One of the original settlers of Bridgewater, MA. Captain Myles Standish, John Alden and others were responsible for equally dividing the land to the settlers (Bridgewater is west of Plymouth). Original group consisted of about sixty.
Mitchell says his will dated 1653 gives all his lands to Francis Cary, who was brought up by and lived with Samuel and Lettice. In 1840 Francis Cary was still living on the same lands inherited by his great-great grandfather. Will also mentions
his brother, John Tomkins, cousins Mary Foster and Elizabeth White, and Hannah Dogget.
Research: Robert A. Tompkins, on p. 9 of his 1942 genealogy, indicates Samuel lived first at Duxbury, MA, then Milford, CT, then Bridgewater, MA.

He married 1st, in Niagara Co., N. Y., Nov. 12, 1815, Susannah Swain, daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth (Hall) Swain, Born May 1, 1790, in Wilmington, Eng. She died in 1828. He married 2d, Oct. 5, 1828, Eliza Rouse, daughter of Anthony and Eunice Rouse, widow of Alpheus Freeman, born May 25, 1799 and died in Chatsworth, Ill., April 17, 1873. He died there Jan. 19, 1875.
Eliza Rouse was born on 25 May 1799.
She was the daughter of Anthony Rouse and Eunice (?).
Eliza Rouse married John Hitchcock on 5 October 1828.
Eliza Rouse died on 17 April 1873 at Chatsworth, Illinois, at age 73.

Ralph Tomkins Ralph Tomkins arrived with wife and family on the Truelove at Plymouth in 1635.
Truelove sailed on Sept 19, 1635
Arrived at Salem, SEP 1635 in the Truelove with wife and YOUNGER members of his
family, according to R. A. Tompkins. Pope says he was living in Dorchester in
1637. Sold property there 2 MAY 1648 to John Farnham of Dorchester and moved
back to Salem 2 MAY 1638.
Purdy says Ralph and Katherine had six children, Ralph and Hannah one child.
The last child born was Martha.
His son, Samuel, was one of the early pioneers of Bridgewater, so Ralph moved
there in his old age to be near Samuel's family, according to Pope.
Ralph was one of the pioneer settlers of Milford, Connecticut.
