John B Tompkins (M) b. 1610, d. 23 June 1684 Pop-up Pedigree
John B Tompkins RESIDENCE:
-1640, 42, at the birth of his two children, Ruth and John, lived in Concord, Middlesex Co., MA.
-1644, Rev. John Jones, pastor at Concord, took a group of families, including John Tompkins, to remove to Fairfield, Fairfield Co., CT.
-Abt 1660, at his death, Fairfield, Fairfield Co., CT.
He Information on pg. 10, Tomkins-Tompkins Genealogy, Robert A. Tompkins and Clare F. Tompkins, published in 1942.
FHL computer records list date of birth as 1980.
He lived at Concord and Eastchester. According to Robert A. Tompkins in his
1942 genealogy the records of Salem, MA and NY overlap and he believes the NY
records. Pope has him living in Salem in 1636, makes no comments as to where
he may have
moved.
Mitchell says he lived in Bridgewater and was called "John Tompkins from
Salem." He further says that John died or removed early, because no others of
that name resided in Bridgewater. He thinks both John and Samuel came from
Salem. Samuel may have lived there earlier, but he moved from Duxbury to Bridgewater.
Pope says John lived at Concord, MA. Pope says he died 23 JUN 1681 . Purdy
says he was a member of the group which went with the Rev. John Jones from
Concord to Fairfield, CT. His name appears frequently in the land and title
records of Fairfield, per Purdy, who says his home lot was west of Hydes Pond.
Likely he moved from Salem to Bridgewater to Eastchester.
Pope says he was baptized 16 DEC 1644.
NEHGS NEXUS article cites as some descendants President William Howard Taft and
President Coolidge . Also mentioned as a descendant is the wife of former
Speaker of the House, Thomas Philip "Tip" O'Neil, Jr. (all of these through
his daughter Sarah and her husband, John Waters).
It is possible that some of the early references to "John Tomkins" in the town
records of Eastchester refer to him (Film 0824106), but that John is more
likely his son, John II.
According to Munsell he "came from the north of England," landing at Plymouth
about 1630, and removed to Concord about 1642.
Research: Probate court, Essex Co., appointed John & others to lay out Widow
Read's thirds according to law (Salem Quarterly Court Records, Vol. 5, Leaf 33.
