Nathaniel Tomkins Spelling is in dispute. He may have been one of the first to adopt the "P" in
spelling of his surname, although the later records of Town of Eastchester
appear to refer to a younger Nathaniel, the older being his uncle, and the
surname spelling is Tomkins. Using his date of birth as a baseline, it would
appear his father migrated to Eastchester after 1670.
All sources list his birthplace as Concord except Munsell who lists
Eastchester. Munsell also uses birth and death years of 1684-1733.

John Tompkins (M) b. 25 August 1642, d. after 1702 Pop-up Pedigree
Reference=1024
John Tompkins Robert Tompkins indicates date of death based on the fact that he deeded land
to his daughter, Hannah Tompkins Hyatt in 1702. This reference to Hannah
Tompkins Hyatt is also found in Purdy.
R. A. Tompkins also has this John (John II) married to Mary READ 20 NOV 1693.
Probate administration referred to below clearly indicates, from reference to
remnant, Mary, list of children, reference to John Sr., etc. that John I
married Mary READ.
Mitchell lists John and his sister Ruth as the son of John (Boston Records),
although this reference to Boston is not explained. Mitchell lists 1642 as
year of birth.
Pope lists birthdate as 25 JUL 1642, not AUG.
Signed the patent of incorporation of the Town of Eastchester, 25 NOV 1668.
Town had been settled earlier but this agreement made ownership of land in the
area, probably granted a patent, official.
There is an entry that "John Tomkins" is admitted as an inhabitant of
Eastchester by official action of the town 5 MAR 1672. This appears
inconsistent with the entry immediately above, both from the town records.
His surname consistently is spelled in this fashion through the next 30 years
of records. This appears to be the approximate date when he moved to
Eastchester. Likely moved to Eastchester from Fairfield, Connecticut.
Served the town of Eastchester as Pounder, Fence Viewer, Assistant Constable at
different times over 30 year period. Frequently served a year term of Fence
Viewer and was often selected to arbitrate boundary lines.
Appears as one of the ten largest contributors to the Eastchester Church
(presumably Congregationalist/Puritan). Eastchester town proceeding are very
similar to Plymouth, Salem, Scituate, and other early towns in Plymouth and
Massachusetts Bay
Colonies. Tithes, for example, would appear in the town records and the salary
of the minister, etc. would be determined there.
16 FEB 1693 he sold five acres of land to Moses Hoit, Jr. John's name is
becoming less common in the activities of the town about this time. On 21 FEB
1689 some land to Henry Fowler. On 8 MAR 1694, he gave a parcel of land to
"my loving Brother Nathanell." There are no entries of purchase by him during
this time, so he appears to have been approaching less active involvement in
the hard labor of farming. He would have been about age 52.
He is first referred to as John Tomkins (senior; he also had a son named John)
in an Eastchester town record of 6 APR 1695.
Munsell in American Ancestry lists year of death as 1680 which appears
inconsistent with Eastchester town records.
Robert A. Tompkins has him living in Concord and Eastchester, which appears to
be correct, although he may also have lived in Connecticut.
Research: Spelled "Jon" in will of his father, John.
Will of his father (John I) was administered on 28 APR 1681, Salem 1/4
Records, Vol. 6, Leaf 17. Son, "Jon," is mentioned in administration
proceedings.
Tompkins-Tomkins Genealogy by Tompkins, Robert A. and Clare F., published 1942,

Place of death in FHL computer records; East Chester, Orange County New York.
This appears to be in error because Eastchester is in Westchester County.
