J. Quincy Tompkins Quince worked in various retail stores, including the one in Maxon in early
20th century. In his later years he was a tour guide at the State Capitol
Building and also did a little baby-sitting for his great grandchildren, Jerry
and Sandy
Tompkins.
He operated the restaurant in Olivet briefly, which is why Paul Dewey was born
there. Later moved to back to Maxson corner where he operated a grocery/mail
service with his brother, Fred Logan Tompkins. He later managed the Melvern
I.G.A. store,
then moved to Topeka when it changed ownership.
He bought the house at 120 Roberts, Melvern, after the birth of his daughter,
Edith Lucille.
He was a Republican.
It is generally believed that his given name was Quincy Tompkins, that he
adopted the initial J. at a later date. His sister, Lucille, always said this
was because many people addressed mail to him that way so he just started using
the J. His
son's application for a Delayed Birth Certtificate lists only the name, Quincy.
The J. has been added due to popular use by Quincy and family members.
Attached photograph entitled Tompkins/JQFam/Young was taken circa 1908 and

Ivah Gale Thompson Headstone (Melvern Cemetery) reads "Iva" but family Bible reads "Ivah." This
same variation is found in a number of places. "Ivah" selected because that's
entry, in two places, in family Bible, as well as spelling used by her son,
Paul Dewey, in
applying for a Delayed Certificate of Birth.
Moved to Kansas when she was ten years old. Lived in the Melvern area most of
her life. The same Delayed Certificate of Birth lists Indiana for Ivah Gale.
Spent last 10 years of her life in Topeka State Hospital due to her mind
deteriorating from complications arising from diabetes.
Daphne Mae Sedgwick Tompkins says she always was a very pleasant lady to visit
with when Daphne was a child. Place of birth listed as Indiana on certified
copy of Paul Dewey Tompkins' birth certificate.
Research: Obituary; Family Bible; headstone; newspaper obituary is dated 29 SEP

Nathaniel Tompkins (M) b. 1633, d. 6 September 1684 Pop-up Pedigree
Nathaniel Tompkins Spelling of last name in Eastchester records consistently is "Tomkins."
Moved from Milford, CT to "Ten Farms" in Eastchester Co., NY in 1665, according
to Purdy and R. A. Tompkins.
FIRST NEW YORK CITY COWBOY. The following is a proclamation of E. Andross,
Governor of the Colony of New York.
"Whereas I am given to understand that they are diverse stray horses within the
Jurisdiction of Westchester and Eastchester and parts adjasant which are not
markt or recorded according to law an have no proper owners as being nott by
any given in to
law and have no proper owners as being nott by any given in the Actes and are
very damegabell to the contery These are in his Majesties name to authorize and
appoint you Nathanell Tomkins of the Town of Eastchester to seize upon and
acquire any
such horses as strayes for his majestie and public use and to bring them to the
next Justice of the Peace or Constable or overseer for their due conviction as
above according to law and from time to time made a due return thereof unto the
High
Sheriffe and for your pains and truebell hearing ye half to be allowed your fee
which shall be your sufficante warrante for the space of one whole year next
insuing the date hereof Given under my hand in New Yorke this 6th day of
December, 1676
this order to be recorded at West and East Chester." There are no changes in
original text or punctuation. Keep in mind that Eastchester today (1994) is
adjacent to Brooklyn, New York.
He often served town as Fence Viewer, Deputy Constable and Constable. While
serving as constable 2 JAN 1681, he was instructed by the town council to "to
cause a good pair of stocks on the village acct to be made." This would be a
reference to
punishment stocks where the Constable would place an offender who had violated
the Sabbath, not kept his fences in good repair, etc.
1 DEC 1683 he was appointed along with two other men to
"go into the woods with the Indians which are understood to lay claim thereunto
the above said land (Eastchester). These said men are appointed to mark out
the land with the pattain of Eastchester and go and know what the said Indians
do ask for th
said land and bring report to the rest of the inhabitants."
Signed the patent (pattain) of incorporation of the Town of Eastchester, 25 NOV
1668. Town had been settled earlier but this agreement made ownership of land
in the area official.
Although he was senior in age to his brother, John II, it appears John may have
suffered failing health in his later years as land was transferred to
Nathaniel. Also, although both held similar posts of responsibility, Nathaniel
on the whole
appears to have been in more of a leadership position. It is also possible
that Nathaniel moved to Eastchester earlier than John. Both probably migrated
from Milford, CT.
Research: R. A. Tompkins is one source for move to Eastchester. See
Tompkins-Tomkins Genealogy, Tompkins, Robert A. and Clare F., published 1942,
FHL film number 1321290.
Referred to as a yeoman in Essex County Probate Files, Docket 27,800 (in the
matter of the will of his father, John); Also referred to as living in Salem.
Name is spelled "Nathaniell Tompkins." This would indicate both a freeman and
a skilled
laborer or tradesman.
He is mentioned as oldest son in will of father, John, dated 30 JUN 1681,
Salem, Essex, Massachusetts.
GENEALOGY OF THE ANCESTORS OF ELIAS QUEREAU TOMPKINS, by George J. and Ruth T.
Purdy
Records of the Town of Eastchester, FHL film no. 0824106, have extensive
references to Nathaniel and his brother John (John I).
Ancestral File of the FHL.
Moved from Milford, CT to "Ten Farms" in Eastchester Co., NY in 1665, according
to Purdy and R. A. Tompkins.
The Tompkins Genealogy says that he moved from Milford, Conn. to "Ten Farms", Eastchester Co., NY in 1665. A footnote in Early Wills (page 279) states that Nathaniel was living in Fairfield, Conn, in 1649, and settled in Eastchester in 1664.
Nathaniel's will is dated Sep 2, 1684, and was proved Nov 19, 1684. It begins: "In the name of God, Amen. I, Nathaniel Tompkins of Eastchester, make this my last will and testment, being in perfect memory, Blessed by God." In it he names his brother, John and Nathaniel White, and his wife, Elizabeth, executors. He left his wife use of 1/3 of the upland and meadows, and the use of both the houses, and home lot during widowhood. His only son, Nathaniel, was to have the use of the rest of the estate, and he also left $10 to each of this 4 daughters which he then named.
The inventory of his estate and its value lists the following: "home lot and all ye housing" $80; 11 acres of meadow $30; "13 acres of upland already layed out and manured, and about 21 acres of upland undivided" $15; 2 oxen $8; 3 cows $9; "two 3 year olds" $5; one Bay Horse lent to Mr. Gibbs" $6; 20 sheep $8; 10 swine $5; "his waring clothes" $5; "his gun and sword" $1. All figures with $ are English pounds not American dollars.
He was christened in 1633.
He was born in 1633 at Fairfield, Fairfield County, Connecticut.1
He was the son of John B Tompkins and Margaret Goodman.
Nathaniel Tompkins married Elizabeth White between 1664 and 1682.
Nathaniel Tompkins left a will on 2 September 1684 at Eastchester, Westchester County, New York, Will proved: 19 Nov 1684, Eastchester, Westchester County, New York.1
He died on 6 September 1684 at Eastchester, Westchester County, New York, USA.1
