                                   Lewis Fenstemaker was described as average weight and 5 feet 6 inches in height, blue eyes and brown hair. He just had a moderate education, but owing to much reading, gave the impression of being well educated. He loved hunting and fishing. He learned the harness-making trade when he was young and also worked in a railroad shop. Serving as an elder in the church he was a man of good Christian character.3,4,5 He was born on 11 June 1839 at Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of George W. Fenstermacher Sr and Lydia Schweppenheiser.6 Lewis Fenstemaker lived in 1860 at Hamilton, Lee County, Illinois.7 He was mustered into service on 7 September 1861 by Colonel Simonson at Camp Butler, Illinois, for a 3 year period during the Civil War in the 34th Infantry Regiment of Illinois Volunteers, Company D. On 3 January 1864, he joined for another 3 year service and was enrolled as a Veteran Volunteer by Lieutenant Williams in Chattanooga, Tennessee. On 27 January 1864, he was mustered into service by Lieutenant Montgomery in Springfield, Illinois.4,5 He was mustered out on 12 July 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky, by Captain Papst.5 He married Francis Elizabeth Wheaton, daughter of Jophar Wheaton and Ann Ely June, on 6 January 1869 at Amboy, Lee County, Illinois.8,3 Lewis Fenstemaker was listed as a Boiler Maker in the 1870 Federal Census.8 He and Francis Elizabeth Wheaton appeared on the census of 2 June 1880 at Wheeling, Livingston County, Missouri.9 Lewis Fenstemaker lived in 1883 at Dale, Jerauld County, South Dakota.10 He purchased 160 acres on 29 December 1887 at Dale, Jerauld County, South Dakota.11,12 He was a member in 1888 at Methodist Episcopal Church, Alpena, Jerauld County, South Dakota.13 He appeared on the census of 6 June 1900 at Alpena, Jerauld County, South Dakota.14 He appeared on the census of 1910.
