From the notes of Vera Casteel: Matte Belle died of a stroke, Roy and Letha said they believed she had a blood vessel break in her head because she was in such pain she would pull her finger nails off. Matte Belle always said James Hallmark was the best looking man she ever saw. The first day Roy Hallmark came home his mama asked him how he liked his teacher, he said, "Okay, but she's not as pretty as you," every year she would ask him the same question and he always gave the same answer until the 6th grade. He said, "Well, she's mighty pretty mama" and she never asked him again. Martha Belle Corbin was also known as (?) Mattie. She was buried at Clinton Cemetery, Section 4, Lot 24, Clinton, Douglas County, Kansas.1 She was born on 8 August 1877 at Eskridge, Wabaunsee County, Kansas. She was the daughter of William Burton Corbin and Martha Luzena Rouse. Martha Belle Corbin married John Henry Hallmark, son of William Hallmark II and Nancy Wagner, on 3 January 1898 at Richland, Marshall County, Kansas.2 As of 3 January 1898,her married name was Hallmark.2 Martha Belle Corbin died on 31 August 1924 at Lawrence, Douglas County, Kansas, at age 47 of a Stroke.
