I.G.I. gives only the baptism date of 29 SEP 1646, although it has so many Elizabeth Tompkins listed it is likely one could find one which agreed with Pope. Purdy gives baptism date of 29 SEP 1646. Research: I.G.I. of FHL and R.A. Tompkins 1942 genealogy agree, although there are a bunch of Elizabeths in the I.G.I. with the other dates. Stephen Tompkins Father of the Tompkins boys that settled in Norway, NY, according to August, 1890 article of the Norway, NY "Norway Tidings" newspaper. Stephen Sr. lived and probably died in Dutchess County, NY. By two marriages he had 9 sons and 1 daughter. Two of his sons, Nathaniel and Searles, came to Norway, NY in 1794. They later moved to Schoharie Co., NY. His son, Samuel, lived in Norway and raised a family. He was noted for his love of litigation and removed to the Black River country. One of Samuel's sons, Griffin, resides in Norway, NY. Another son of Stephen, Sr., Cornelius, spent his last years in Norway. Stephen, Sr. was a blacksmith, and in his will registered 24 DEC 1794, left his tools to his 4th son, Uriah. Will was written 25 JUL 1794. Cornelius, 7th of 10 sons, recd. 50 pounds. He lived at Kinderhook and Norway, NY per R. A. Tompkins, who also lists him as born at Kinderhook. Kinderhook is in present day Putnam County. A Stephen and Lawrence Tompkins leased farmland in Charlotte Twp, Dutchess Co., in 1773. Who is Lawrence? He does not appear in any materials reviewed to date. The names of many of the children of Nathaniel II are not known and that may be one possible explanation. Military: Stephen, Sr. served in the Revolutionary War from Dutchess Co. Sumner Tompkins died in March 1923 at A Missouri Hospi, USA.
