Caius Marius Tompkins Caius left home in Iowa and moved to Twin Springs, Linn County, Kansas some
time prior to 14 MAY 1861, Married Sally and lived in Twin Springs after first
hitch during civil war. Moved to Osage County in 1869, near Maxson. Maxson
was never
incorporated and is found on few maps. Maxson Corner might be a better term.
It is located two miles north of Melvern, three miles east, northwest corner.
All that remains (1981) is the foundation of one of the buildings. It never
had more than
three or four buildings, inclusive of the church and school.
One of 28 charter members of Pleasant Run Grange, No. 418, 5 AUG 1873.
On Nov. 7, 1877 mortgaged his land at S.E. 1/4, S26-17-16 to Littleton Savings
Bank. Paid off March, 1882. The reference to A. E. Tompkins in a transaction
7 NOV 1877, the same date, is not understood. That would be Almira E., sister
of Caius.
In 1877 the United States granted a patent to A. E. Thompkins (sic).
The 1910 population of Maxson was 40. It had a schoolhouse, church, and
store/post office which was later discontinued.
Retired 1904 and moved to Gas City, Ks. to be near James and Fred, two of his
sons, who worked in the smelters there.
Military: On 14 MAY 1861 he enlisted as a private in Co. F, 2nd KS Volunteer
Infantry, mustering out 31 OCT 1861 .
He enlisted as a private 18 SEP 1863 in Co. M, 15th KS Volunteer Cavalry, a
unit active in several battles in the Springfield, MO area, and was mustered
out 19 OCT 1865.
